The Academic Advising Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes.     Other Conditions: General or special funds. Appointment to begin June 2024 or soon thereafter. Selectee is required to complete the COE New Faculty Orientation in the first year, Title IX training, and pass a criminal background check.
     
    Duties and Responsibilities
    Under the general direction of the Director of OSAS, provide all services related to OSAS core functions (recruitment, admission, academic advising, retention, and graduation audits/licensure recommendations) to include, but not limited to:

    • Advise students in assessing their interests and abilities, examining their educational goals, developing short- and long-term goals, making decisions, and creating academic plans to meet their objectives;
    • Teach/present advising curricula in individual, small, and large group settings;
    • Lead the College of Education Pu‘uhonua Program by developing recruitment, academic advising, retention, and student success initiatives for Native Hawaiian Students based on best practices and national trends;
    • Travel among the Hawaiian Islands and other locations to provide OSAS services and meet the unique needs of Native Hawaiian high school and community college students, career changers, and others interested in COE programs;
    • Serve as the OSAS representative to the COE Teacher Education Committees by participating in decision making impacting curricular changes.  Communicate new curricular changes and policy initiatives to the department, outlining potential impacts to the COE teacher preparation programs;
    • Conduct assessment of advising, the department, and student progress;
    • Develop programs utilizing a variety of technological tools to enhance OSAS related services;
    • Collaborate with faculty and other constituents within the College of Education, UH system offices, and the broader educational community;
    • Be responsible for accuracy and consistency in applying college and university policies and procedures;
    • Keep abreast of new and innovative initiatives in the student services profession by meeting regularly with counterparts across the UH System and with colleagues nationwide;
    • Maintain a research/scholarly profile related to academic advising as a profession;
    • Communicate effectively in verbal and written forms in a variety of contexts;
    • Serve as an active member and/or officer on committees, task forces, professional organizations, or governing bodies for the COE, UH System, and/or national student services organization;
    • Possible evening, weekend, or off-campus assignments;
    • Other duties as assigned.
     
    Minimum Qualifications
    1. A master’s degree in education or related area and 30 credits of graduate study from a college or university of recognized standing;
    2. At least three years of academic advising experience in a higher education setting at the next lower rank or equivalent;
    3. Demonstrated ability to relate to students of Hawai`i’s multicultural backgrounds especially Native Hawaiian students;
    4. Demonstrated use of current technology to improve services to students;
    5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in groups and teams;
    6. Proven ability to establish effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, support staff, and the general public.
     
    Desirable Qualifications
    1. Knowledge of teacher education and Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science (KRS) programs;
    2. Knowledge of academic and support services in higher education;
    3. Demonstrated ability to coordinate, implement, and evaluate student support programs;
    4. Knowledge and experience with Native Hawaiian student support service programs in higher education;
    5. Experience with databases and student information systems;
    6. Active involvement in professional associations related to student services;
    7. Teaching experience at the K-12 level.
