Accounting Director directs the operations and policies of an accounting function. Implements accounting policies and procedures that adhere to governmental, financial, and tax regulations and comply with GAAP and IFRS standards. Being an Accounting Director monitors and evaluates accounting systems and processes to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Oversees overall monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes and reporting. Additionally, Accounting Director develops and directs accounting professionals and supports staff through subordinate managers. Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. May require Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Typically reports to a head of accounting. The Accounting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Accounting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities Of Director Of Accounting- Plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting operational
- Support the organizations financial objectives by providing financial analysis and recommendations and directing staff accordingly.
- Publish monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with Executive mandates.
- Develop accounting organizational strategies by contributing accounting and financial information, analysis, and recommendations for strategic thinking and direction, and establishing functional objectives in line with organizational objectives.
- Establish accounting operational strategies by evaluating trends, establishing critical measurements, determining production, productivity, quality, and service strategies, designing systems, accumulating resources, resolving problems, and implementing change.
- Provide financial projections by coordinating budget/forecast preparation, collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial information, and advising departments on the collection and analysis of data.
- Manage the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results.
- Coordinate and prepare internal and external financial statements and provide management with the information vital to the decision-making process.
- Prepare and publish annual budgets.
- In direct collaboration with Business Unit Leaders and the Executive Team, define and prepare Business Unit Financial Key Performance Indicators.
- Define, publish, manage, and direct departmental quarterly and annual key initiatives.
- Hire, train and retain skilled accounting staff.
- Evaluate and assess current operations and offer recommendations for improvement, savings opportunities and implement new process.
- Coordinate activities with external auditors and accountants, as necessary.
- Assist in hiring sub-tier employees by conducting interviews of candidates.
- Ability to accurately calculate and interpret financial data.
- Provide direction to resolve problems to all business unit team members.
- Ability to identify and adapt to the needs of the organization and team members.
- Strong prioritization skills and ability to delegate tasks to team members.
- Communicate using the following tools: telephone, fax machine, written logs, email, and computer.
- Having a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) QuickBooks, and other accounting related software.
- Strong working ability to read and interpret financial statements.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must have a bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- Six plus years of relevant accounting experience.
