The University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law invites applicants for the position of Associate Dean and Director of the Law Library. This position is a 12-month appointment reporting to the Dean of the USC Joseph F. Rice School of Law.
The Associate Dean and Director will direct the Law Library, including management of its budget, personnel, and policies; the professional development of law library faculty and staff; and representation of the Law Library in the School of Law, the University, and other venues. The incumbent will foster an environment of continuous improvement, develop new services for a diverse community of patrons, and will be especially interested in evaluating and implementing emerging technologies in all aspects of law librarianship. With senior leadership and faculty in the School, the Director will help guide collection development priorities and strategies and will leverage space to meet the evolving needs of legal education and research. Currently, the Law Library has a staff of Eight librarians and five staff members and a budget of over $2.5 million.
The Associate Dean and Director teaches introductory legal research in a required first-year integrated research and writing course and may be expected, where appropriate, to teach upper-level courses in legal research and fulfill other teaching responsibilities in the School of Law, such as serving as advisor for Supervised Legal Research projects. The Associate Dean and Director may teach non-research courses within the School of Law if such teaching does not interfere with their other responsibilities.
The University of South Carolina’s Law Library is the largest law library in South Carolina, and one of the larger in the Southeast, serving a vibrant and diverse patron base as the de facto law library for the state. The Law Library is independently administered, with a collection of over 500,000 volumes, robust electronic resource access, and a staff of 15.
