Assoc. Professor - Special Education teaches courses in the discipline area of special education. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Assoc. Professor - Special Education provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Assoc. Professor - Special Education typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks.     SUMMARY: This position supports special education staff and administrations in coordinating and implementing special education services in the mild/moderate settings kindergarten to 12th grade.


    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 

    Knowledge of Instruction 

    1. Demonstrates knowledge of the Utah Core Standards. 
    2. Demonstrates knowledge of disciplinary-specific literacy skills into instruction to purposefully engage learners in interacting with content knowledge. 
    3. Demonstrates knowledge of effective instructional strategies for neurodiverse learners. 
    4. Demonstrates knowledge of pull-out and push-in, collaboration, co-teaching methods. 
    5. Knowledge of Universal Design of Learning or differentiation. 
    6. Skilled at data collection, review and implementation of interventions based on data. 
    7. Knowledge of de-escalation strategies including but not limited to Safety Care, Happy Classroom, Ascend. 
    8. Knowledge of LRBI guidelines. 

    Provides Effective Professional Learning 

    1. Bases instruction on accurate content knowledge using multiple representations of concepts and appropriate academic language. 
    2. Practices a range of developmentally and culturally appropriate instructional strategies that engage and meet the needs of adult learners. 
    3. Provides multiple opportunities for students to develop higher-order and meta-cognitive skills. 
    4. Uses a variety of available and appropriate technology and resources to support adult learning.

    Knowledge of Special Education Rules 

    1. Skilled at writing solid IEPs including PLAFF, goals, transition statements, etc. 
    2. Knowledge of PSSP or Goalview or other on-line special education program. 
    3. Knowledge of Medicaid, SCRAM, manifestation determination, least restrictive processes. 
    4. Knowledge of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans. 
    5. Knowledge of MTSS processes to support learning, the special education referral process and special education instruction. 
    6. Knowledge of LEA responsibilities and duties. 
    7. Knowledge of state and federal regulations to support file audit compliance. 
    8. Understanding of transfer of rights at age of majority.

    7. Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-530 Utah Effective Educator Standards at all levels to teacher development. 
    8. Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-515 Utah Educator Professional Standards. 
    9. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements in an efficient and effective manner; required to attend activities, events and meetings outside of normal work hours on a regular basis. 
    10. Maintain professional workplace etiquette and represents the department/district in a professional manner; communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees. 
    11. Demonstrates adaptability and understanding of cultural differences in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality. 
    12. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the school. 

     

    Work Environment Requirements: 

    1. Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations. 
    2. Driving to work locations 
    3. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work: however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, etc.… 

     
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

    1. Valid Professional State of Utah Special Education Teacher License or a Special Education Teacher License from another state that is transferrable to Utah. 
    2. 3 years’ experience teaching in a special education classroom or other classroom setting that included neurodiverse learners. 
    3. Professional communication skills including, but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.  
    4. Experience with grade level/content PLC’s/data meetings for analysis of student data to inform instructional practices for highest student achievement. 

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. 5 years’ experience teaching in a special education classroom or other classroom setting that included neurodiverse learners. 
    2. Bi-Lingual- Spanish Speaker:  speaks, reads, writes and understands spoken Spanish 
    3. Previous instructional coaching experience  
    4. Experience with mild/moderate students in multiple age groups (elementary, middle or junior high, and/or senior high/post high) 
    5. Safety Care trained or willing to become Safety Care trained within first three months on the job. 
    6. Have an ESL Endorsement or will obtain one within 4 years of hire.
