    Job Summary

    The Mathematics Department invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geometry/Engineering position.

    This position will support joint research efforts, training of undergraduate and graduate students in areas of common interest to the Mathematics Department in the College of Science and the College of Engineering. The mathematical expertise of the researcher is Differential Geometry with applications. Areas of applications of specific interest should include one or more of computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence or robotics.

    The position has 70% of effort allocated in the Department of Mathematics in the College of Science (CoS) and 30% of effort in the College of Engineering ( COE ), in either the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science or the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. During the first year of service, the teaching load is reduced to 1 quarter courses in Mathematics and one course in Engineering. During the second year of service, the teaching load is 2 quarter courses in Mathematics and one quarter course in Engineering. Course releases are by mutual agreement with the Department of Mathematics Head and the leadership of the appropriate Engineering academic unit.

    Assistant Professors in the Department of Mathematics in the College of Science, and in the College of Engineering are expected to demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, advising and other institutional activities; achievement in scholarship and creative activity that establishes the individual as a significant contributor to the field or profession; and an appropriate balance of institutional and professional service. All professorial positions are expected to make significant contributions to undergraduate and graduate education.

    Safety is an integral part of physical experiments, both in research and teaching. Faculty are expected to prioritize health and safety in the execution of their professional activities. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that their students, research and teaching assistants, and others under their supervision are briefed on and complying with OSU Environmental Health and Safety protocols pertaining to the execution of their research and learning activities.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    Teaching, Advising, and Other Instructional Activities (45% of effort):

    • Teach 3 courses, including cross‐listed courses, per academic year at the undergraduate or graduate level in Mathematics.
    • Teach 1 course per academic year at the undergraduate or graduate level in Engineering.
    • Contribute to general or specialty seminars in the department and appropriate Engineering academic unit.

    Advising and other instructional activities (10% of effort)

    • Advise graduate students and participate on M.S. and Ph.D. graduate committees,
    • Advise undergraduate students in their academic programs, research, and career directions as assigned by the leadership of the Department of Mathematics and of the Engineering academic unit,
    • Supervise teaching assistants if appropriate,
    • Mentor and support students in research projects internships, or seminars and in the writing and publication of their results,
    • Participate in course and degree assessment and curricular and instructional development in both academic units.

    Scholarship and Creative Activity (35% of effort):

    • Develop a program of research and scholarship that is recognized at the national and international level,
    • Disseminate the research results by publication in high‐impact peer‐reviewed journals, presentations at professional meetings, and by other means appropriate for the discipline,
    • Seek extramural funding for research including the support of graduate assistant stipends, travel, summer salary, and other appropriate costs of the research program,
    • Develop collaborations with colleagues in the College of Engineering in areas of common research interest.
    • Collaborate with colleagues on and off campus as appropriate in the development of scholarly work.

    Service (10% of effort):

    • Service on departmental, College of Science, College of Engineering or university committees as assigned,
    • Service to the profession such as refereeing, editing, committee work, organizing conference or sessions, and similar activities,
    • Service to the public through presentations or outreach programs as appropriate
    • Maintain an appropriate balance between service to the institution and to the profession
    • Participate on initiatives that promote interactions and collaborations between faculty and students in the Colleges of Science and Engineering.

    What You Will Need

    • PhD in Mathematics, or related field, by start date.
    • Research activity in the area of Differential Geometry with interdisciplinary applications including at least one of computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotics.
    • Demonstrated ability or significant potential to develop, conduct and disseminate high‐quality research.
    • Demonstrated ability or significant potential for teaching excellence and commitment to student success which can benefit the graduate and undergraduate programs at OSU .
