  • Position Title: Associate Professor - Environmental Science Appointment Type: Faculty Job Description: Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Iowa State University seeks applicants for an Associate Professor with tenure. The position is a 9-month appointment and has responsibilities of approximately 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service (10%). The successful candidate will have a majority appointment in NREM with options for collaborative appointments in agronomy or another appropriate department. We seek an individual who works in the area of soil, water, and air quality in agricultural landscapes. The candidate will develop an externally funded research program in their scholarly discipline, which could include climate science, carbon sequestration, climate-smart agriculture, or another closely related field. Mentoring graduate students in research is expected. The candidate will teach courses in their area of expertise that align with departmental needs. This could include courses relating to soil and water in agricultural landscapes or bio-geochemistry. The candidate will provide service to the department, institution, and profession through committees and student-focused programs. All three responsibilities (research, teaching, and service) will require the successful candidate to have excellent oral and written communication skills. Required Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent in soil science, environmental science, agronomy, or a closely related field. Qualification for the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. Preferred Qualifications: (1) Peer-reviewed publication record in environmental science, soil science, water quality, or closely related fields (2) Experience teaching at the college level (3) Experience supervising/mentoring staff and/or graduate and undergraduate students in conducting research (4) Demonstrated experience writing grants and obtaining external funding support for research activities Department/Program & College Description: The NREM Department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is dedicated to the Land Grant missions of teaching, research, and extension. The Department is broad in scope, with ~400 undergraduate students in Animal Ecology, ~80 students in Forestry, and >50 graduate students in Fisheries Biology, Forestry, and Wildlife Ecology or in Interdepartmental Graduate Programs in which NREM faculty are affiliated. The department houses the U.S. Geological Survey’s Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. In addition to on-campus facilities for teaching and research, NREM manages the Rod and Connie French Conservation Camp in western Montana as well as an aviary and artificial ponds ~8 miles north of the main ISU campus.
