    The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maine seeks to fill an ongoing, non-tenure track, academic-year appointment as Lecturer, anticipated to start September 3, 2024.


    Candidates are being sought who have shown clear evidence of potential for excellence in teaching and technical communication, and have demonstrated a commitment to scholarly excellence via outstanding graduate-level (or beyond) work in the disciplines of physics and astronomy. Preference may be given to candidates whose record shows active commitment to mentoring or advancing women and/or others who are underrepresented in the field of physics. The position also requires active, collegial engagement in professional and university service.


    Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Undergraduate teaching in departmental lower- and upper-division courses; may include upper-division laboratory courses and coordination of teaching assistants in lower-division laboratory and/or recitation sections.
    • Collaborative work with others involved in delivering multi-section introductory courses.
    • Participation in curriculum development and assessment.
    • Mentoring of teaching assistants as laboratory and/or recitation coordinator and mentoring of undergraduate Maine Learning Assistants (peer facilitators) in relevant courses as appropriate.
    • Service to the department, college, and university.

    The typical teaching assignment for this position will be the equivalent of 7 classes per academic year, with approximately 3.5 classes (or the equivalent) in each of the Fall and Spring semesters. It is expected that 90% of the lecturer’s time and effort will be dedicated to teaching-related duties, and 10% to other activities, including service and activities that advance the lecturer’s professional development. Summer teaching opportunities may be available, with additional compensation.

    Required:

    • A master’s degree in physics (or a closely related area), along with graduate study beyond the master’s, is required by date of hire.
    • Demonstrated effective college-level teaching in physics.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills, including skills in technical communication.
    • Demonstrated familiarity with and/or openness to active engagement teaching strategies.

    Preferred:

    • PhD in physics (or a closely related area) completed by the date of hire.
    • A record of successful performance in collaborative settings.
    • Demonstrated experience with research on the learning and teaching of physics.
    • Experience in a supervisory or mentoring role.
    • Demonstrated experience with implementing active engagement and/or research-based teaching strategies in the classroom.
    • Record of effective involvement in the development and/or assessment of curriculum.
    • Potential to contribute to the University of Maine’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse student body that includes first-generation and low-income students and those from groups that are under-represented in physics.
