Behavioral Health Director oversees the study and treatment of patients with emotional, mental, or psychological disorders. Develops, implements, and updates strategic initiatives, programs, and services. Being a Behavioral Health Director manages and directs the operations of behavioral health services. Uses knowledge of behavioral health research and trends to ensure the department's practices are up-to-date and effective. Additionally, Behavioral Health Director establishes training programs and supports and supervises staff. Ensures all behavioral health operations comply with clinical guidelines and regulations. Requires an advanced degree in psychology or related field. Typically reports to top management. The Behavioral Health Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     Position Summary:

    Responsible for the planning and operations for the Behavioral Health Program, interfacing with the medical staff, nursing departments and other ancillary departments, in order to achieve clinical, quality, and financial goals. Ensures compliance with organizational, regulatory agency, and accrediting body policies, procedures, regulations, standards, and requirements. Ensures that all behavioral health operations are functional and provide patient care in the most efficient and cost effective manner.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

    • Uses independent judgment to exercise authority on behalf of the Medical Center, or effectively recommend such action in the following areas:
    • May request, interview, and make hiring decisions in regard to personnel for this area;
    • May discipline subordinates according to Medical Center procedure;
    • Responsible for assigning work to employees and directing the workflow in area of jurisdiction;
    • Attempts to resolve customer complaints/concerns (internal & external);
    • Conducts annual performance appraisal interviews with subordinates;
    • May, with Administrative approval, recommend and grant employee advancements/wage in­creases.
    • Responsible for the department’s quality improvement program and participates in performance improvement activities.
    • Responsible for the evaluation and planning of departmental/unit activities.
    • Responsible for all patient related clinical activities in area of jurisdiction at all times.
    • In consultation with the Vice President of Patient Care Services:
    • Develops short and long range goals and objectives of the Behavioral Health Program.
    • Develops, recommends and administers department policies and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of the department.
    • Provides leadership and appropriate interface between the Behavioral Health Program and all operations within the Medical Center.
    • Represents the Behavioral Health Program with third parties and public agencies.
    • Responsible for utilization review and resource management activities within the Behavioral Health Program.
    • Promotes effective integration between the Psychiatry office based practice and the Behavioral Health Program, in collaboration with the Vice President – Practice Management and Development.
    • In conjunction with Marketing, responsible for marketing community/referral services.
    • Monitors all contracts related to the Behavioral Health Program.
    • Maintains a close working relationship with Managed Care/Third Party Payer organizations.
    • Oversees the achievement of the standards of nursing practice commensurate with the Nursing Code of Ethics and Michigan Public Health Code.
    • Responsible for the orientation program within the Behavioral Health Program.
    • Assists with continuing education of employees in area, while maintaining own professional competence.
    • Assures there are on-going continuing education programs in place to maintain staff competency.
    • Assures compliance with all regulatory and other agency requirements, laws and statutes pertaining to the operation of the department.
    • Evaluates and purchases departmental equipment and supplies.
    • Responsible for fiscal management including staffing, budget, and productivity standards.
    • Maintains high level of physician, staff and customer/patient satisfaction.
    • Role models Bay Pride behaviors and ensures employees display behaviors.
    • Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback.

    • Participates in performance improvement activities.
    • Performs other related duties as required and directed.
    • Demonstrates understanding and competence in all areas of Evidenced Based Leadership including: leader rounding, thank you notes, stoplight reports, 30/90 day conversations, leadership development institutes, linkage grids, skills validation, AIDET, hourly rounding, and High-Middle-Low conversations.

    Position Specific Expectations:

    • Personal contact with various Medical Center employees.
    • Must be physically capable of performing Job Responsibilities with or without accommodation.

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Must possess current Michigan RN license.
    • Three (3) years clinical experience in psychiatric nursing.
    • Two (2) years management experience.
    • Master’s degree in Nursing, or completion of a Master’s in Nursing within forty-eight (48) months of hire/transfer.
