    Job Summary:
    Supervise the R&D Engineering lab function to ensure that all the testing and other processes are compliant and conducted in accordance with internal standard operating procedures and any other applicable regulation. Assure that all the testing is conducted in a timely manner and in adherence to the schedule.

    Essential Functions:
    • Manages day-to-day activities in the R&D Engineering lab.
    • Manages the flow of activity in the lab. Works with R&D managers/engineers to understand department priorities. Has authority to resolve conflicting needs for equipment.
    • Provide direction to other technicians as needed.
    • Manages and organizes layout of lab areas and equipment to maximize productivity.
    • Proposes and implements new tools and equipment to improve lab efficiency.
    • Ensures that all laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
    • Responsible for all calibrated equipment; provides tracking capability of other R&D equipment as needed.
    • Designs protocols to address requirements.
    • Writes test protocols, reports and procedures
    • Reviews others' test reports and provides feedback.
    • Presents test reports and design improvements to R&D project team members.
    • Trains other lab personnel (both technicians and engineers), Operations and Quality, creating training documentation when needed.
    • Provides supervisory feedback for people that regularly use the lab. Resolves conflicts as arises.
    • Acts as a liaison with cross-functional teams.
    • Interfaces with vendors and outside test labs.
    • Builds R&D fixtures from limited specifications. Completes specifications, documentation and builds assembly.
    • R&D prototyping may be done without established procedures
    • Acts as the resident expert for a discipline-specific advanced tools or lab techniques (electrical or electro-mechanical)
    • Initiates ECO's and assists in completion.
    • Able to setup complex systems test configurations.
    • Performs moderately complex analysis independently.
    • Responsible for overall safety in the lab and compliance with OSHA standards related to chemical storage and handling, electrical and fire.
    • Provides supervision and direction as needed to maintain a safe and productive lab environment.
    • Exercise appropriate judgement and good decision making with regard to both personnel and workflow management decisions.

    Skills Requirements:
    • Ability to develop an approach to troubleshooting electro-mechanical assemblies, circuits, accessories, and develop/propose solutions. May include limited software testing.
    • Expert understanding of one or more specific field or tool, such as mechanical stress testing, electrical test equipment, Labview, CAD, etc.
    • Ability to manage confidential information with appropriate discretion and care.

    Required/Preferred Education and Experience:
    • Associates degree in engineering discipline or higher. Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline preferred
    • 5 years of demonstrated experience as a technician
    • Experience managing small to medium sized R&D lab
