Position Summary

The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for an experienced Building Inspector IV who will perform detailed and technical inspections (building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical) of buildings and sites under development during all phases of construction.

Work Week: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

Minimum Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; and
• At least two years of experience in building construction, plans examining, or building inspection; and
• At least five years of experience as a Building Inspector; and
• Possession of each of the following ICC or equivalent certifications:
  • Residential Building Inspector (B1);
  • Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1);
  • Residential Electrical Inspector (E1);
  • Commercial Building Inspector (B2);
  • Commercial Mechanical Inspector (M2);
  • Commercial Electrical Inspector (E2);
  • IAPMO Plumbing Inspector.
• Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of principles and techniques of modern building construction;
• Thorough knowledge of construction materials and their correct installation methods;
• Thorough knowledge of basic math principles;
• Ability to interpret Federal, State, and Municipal building and fire protection codes, ordinances, and guidelines as they apply to the application, plans, and actual construction;
• Ability to maintain required certifications;
• Ability to train new inspectors and provide direction to inspection staff;
• Ability to deal with a wide range of persons, including situations in which individuals may be upset over some issue involved with City activities and policies;
• Ability to conduct thorough inspections of new and existing buildings;
• Ability to instruct project owners, designers, and contractors in methods they need to employ in order to meet code requirements;
• Ability to plan and manage area of responsibility to aid the public in the efficient compliance of the adopted codes to avoid time delays and associated costs;
• Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
• Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
• Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
• Ability to operate a personal computer, mobile, and related devices using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
• Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
• Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
• Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
• Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

Required Special Qualifications

• Valid Driver's License and/or must obtain valid Montana Driver's license within 60 days of employment;
• Must maintain required certifications throughout employment as required;
