    The University of Montana (UM) invites applications for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Engagement and Communications. The Deputy Chief of Staff for Engagement and Communications is a key partner to the President and Chief of Staff in ensuring the work of the Office of the President is of the highest possible impact and quality in support of University priorities. The person in this position will use sound strategic judgement to build and coordinate the President’s internal and external engagement and communications strategy to further the mission of the University, will help implement priorities set by the President and Chief of Staff, and will manage the Office of the President staff. In addition to working closely with the President and Chief of Staff, the Deputy will closely collaborate with the University’s marketing and communications team, with the Alumni Association, and with the UM Foundation in carrying out this work.

    Responsibilities include:
    Presidential Engagement
    • Oversee the development and implementation of an internal and external engagement strategy that ensures the highest and best use of the Office of the President and the President.
    • Serve as a strategic advisor to the President and Chief of Staff on relationships with entities external to the University.
    • In collaboration with the Office of the President staff, the University’s marketing and communications team, and the Alumni Association, prioritize and plan presidential outreach efforts to community, state, and national organizations.
    • Ensure the strategic use and high quality of Office of the President’s hosted events.
    • Coordinate with campus partners to prioritize and implement the President’s engagement with critical constituencies including students, parents, employees, alumni, Tribal leaders, donors, business partners, and state-level officials.
    Presidential Communication
    • Oversee the development and implementation of an internal and external communication strategy for the Office of the President and the President, working in partnership with the President, Chief of Staff, and marketing and communications team.
    • Maintain and refine in collaboration with the President, Chief of Staff, and marketing and communications team a suite of key presidential messages and priorities to be echoed across the University.
    • Draft and edit presidential communications in support of the presidential communication strategy.
    • Orchestrate, direct, and delegate drafting and production of written, spoken, video, and visual content among Office of the President and communications staff.
    • Understand existing processes and engage in process improvement to establish, manage, and refine processes to ensure seamless and efficient coordination of drafting and production of communications.
    • Serve as the last eye on key presidential communications, ensuring high standards.
    • Identify and support presidential efforts to champion and advocate locally, regionally, and nationally for the importance of public higher education and educational access.
    • Develop and regularly refine communication resources for the President, e.g., a running bank of stories and University points of pride.
    • Work closely with the Director of Content and Creative Strategy to integrate institutional content strategy and presidential messaging.

    • Manage the President’s social media presence in partnership with the Vice President for Marketing, Communications, Engagement, and Experience, the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, and the Director of Content and Creative Strategy.
    • Maintain a current understanding of critical issues in higher education and their impact on the University.
    • Maintain a deep understanding of the University’s mission and priorities and identify communication needs and opportunities to advance them.
    • Maintain a nuanced understanding of the University’s context and of the University’s student, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
    • Promote a positive image of the University of Montana.
    Office of the President Supervision and Support
    • Oversee effective and efficient operation of the Office of the President, as carried out by the Director of Operations and Engagement and their direct reports.
    • Supervise the Director of Operations and Engagement.
    • Actively seek and drive efficiencies and process improvements in the Office of the President.
    • Ensure a high level of professionalism among Office of the President staff, and provide support to staff in making sound judgment calls.
    • Provide guidance on key event planning.
    • Support a positive work culture for the members of the Office of the President team.
    • Ensure the members of the Office of the President team remain apprised of key issues and priorities.
    • Plan professional development, performance review, and team building efforts for the Office of the President team.
    Special Projects
    • Manage special projects and other initiatives, as assigned by the Chief of Staff or President.

    Position Details
    • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
    • Salary for this position is $80,000-$90,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
    • Ability to develop and implement impactful engagement and communication strategies.
    • Experience strategically engaging statewide or national stakeholders.
    • Interpersonal communications skills including an acute emotional intelligence.
    • Ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with a wide-ranging group of individuals and entities.
    • Ability to gather and synthesize information, analyze and compile data, and use and communicate relevant summaries.
    • Sound and strategic judgement necessary to make critical administrative and procedural decisions.
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion in working with highly sensitive, proprietary information.
    • Commitment to diversity and the success of University students.
    • Skill in managing and supporting a high-level team through employee development and performance management.
    • Expertise in overseeing, organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling complex, challenging projects for self and others.
    • Knowledge of how to facilitate effective meetings and collaborative processes.
    • Experience in thoughtfully managing conflict.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in a field related to the duties and responsibilities associated with the position.
    • Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
    • Experience advising or working closely with a senior executive or leaders.
