Position Summary
In keeping with the objectives of Old Salem Museums and Gardens’ Learning in Place initiative, the Educator is an integral member of the LIP department, charged with moving OSMG forward as a place of continued discovery, learning, and sharing. As a collaborative member of LIP team, the Educator participates in the development of place-based learning opportunities for the K-12 school community, as well as walk-in visitors and adult group tours. The Educator is a significant contributor to the development of the department, aiding in creating a professional culture that emphasizes quality, continuous improvement and high performance. The Educator is also an effective team member across all facets of OSMG’s operations.
The position is a non-exempt position that is responsible for the development and implementation of educational programs that utilize the 18th and 19th-century Moravian experiences to teach a variety of topics to a diverse audience, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary topics for the K12 audience. The Educator is responsible for creating a positive learning environment and providing exceptional customer service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Education:
- Assist with the development of educational programs that align with education objectives and maximize resources within budget.
- Contribute to the preparation and implementation of interdisciplinary educational instruction plan according to standards set by the museum and in alliance with the North Carolina Essential Standards (as determined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction).
- Assist with the creation and distribution of educational content for use by K12 teachers and students (lesson plans, teacher guides, student activities, etc.).
- Assist with the development of learning materials for the historic site to be used in daily activities and events.
- Use a range of instructional techniques and media consistent with available resources and incorporate new technologies and tools in the creative process.
- Implement educational programs, including the preparation and presentation of programs and events, both on-site, off-site, and through digital franchise.
- Perform scholarly research to aid in the development of educational programs and historical performances.
- Lead special tours, student education programs (including student hands-on experiences), and other projects as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments such as African American Programming nd Horticulture, as research influences site specific content and programs.
- Perform skill demonstrations associated with the historical site to which assigned. These may include open hearth/wood stove cooking, gardening, operating historical equipment, and/or demonstrating other relevant skills. Wears appropriate period clothing provided while performing the work to maintain the historical accuracy of the site.
- Maintain proper use and storage of materials, tools, and equipment to ensure good housekeeping.
- Maintain the historical accuracy of the site.
- Maintain cleanliness and preservation of the assigned historic location.
- Maintain costuming standards as outlined.
Safety & Security:
- Responsible for building opening and closing/shutdown; may include key duties such as unlocking the building and locking the building, as well as securing the alarm.
- Monitor visitors' activities to ensure compliance with regulations and safety practices.
- Provide security for the site, buildings, and exhibits.
- Provide security support, including fire prevention, for historic district as assigned.
- Daily upkeep of streetscape maintenance, interior cleanliness, and environmental (interior and exterior) engagement.
- Enforce agency safety policies and procedures.
Staffing:
- Collaborate in the professional development of new Educators and volunteers throughout the department, as well as provide direct professional development opportunities for division staff.
- Participate in the interview and selection process of new staff.
- Be available to work evenings, weekends and special events as needed.
Customer Service & Engagement:
- Engage with guests and staff in a warm and enthusiastic demeanor.
- Respond to questions and provide pertinent information to visitors.
- Help solve customer concerns.
- Responsible for maintaining a professional and positive demeanor with visitors, Educators, and other members of staff.
- Ensure all site visitors feel welcomed and experience a unique journey.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Provide support to other Educators throughout the district, as needed.
- Must cross-train for other Educator roles within the Historic District
- Adhere to all OSMG Policies and Procedures.
- Participate in required OSMG training and continuing education programs & readings.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS/ SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Experience in educational, museum, heritage site, theater, and customer service positions.
- A love for history and knowledge of best practice techniques for historical research
- Self-motivated with strong communications skills, both oral and written.
- Excellent customer service skills
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement educational programs
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to research, plan, organize, and implement projects.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and complete them on time and on budget.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct original research projects.
- Demonstrated experience working with historical crafts or trades skills.
- High School diploma/GED required; College degree preferred.
- Multilingual abilities are a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, push, pull, crawl, and sit on low chairs.
- The work is conducted year-round in all weather conditions.
- May require working near a fire.
- Must be able to climb stairs.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can occasionally be loud.
