THE ROLE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR COMMUNITY AND BELONGING
Reporting to President Rundell Singer, the Vice President for Community and Belonging will join the following members of the President’s Leadership Team (PLT):
The VPCB is anticipated to manage the following established departments/administrators:
The work of the Vice President for Community and Belonging will be broad and all encompassing. The VPCB will shape belonging and inclusion at St. Olaf across myriad groups and salient characteristics, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, citizenship, and disability.
Building on the past and ongoing DEIB work at St. Olaf, the Vice President for Community and Belonging will:
Build a comprehensive DEIB strategy for students, faculty, and staff: The VPCB will drive progress toward shared goals by providing expertise, insight, strategic vision, and counsel to a wide range of constituencies in a variety of contexts. In consultation with student, staff, faculty, and community leadership, the VPCB will analyze policies, practices, legislation, and regulations related to DEIB and make recommendations to College leadership. The VPCB will help create streamlined and uniform DEIB initiatives that complement and build upon past successes. In addition, the VPCB will facilitate the collecting and tracking of data points, national trends, and survey feedback in order to provide quantitative markers of the College’s efforts and progress in order to inform the strategic direction of future endeavors.
Partner with key offices and leaders to recruit talented students, faculty, and staff: Partnering with Marketing and Communications, the VPCB will develop messaging to increase awareness of the College’s DEIB goals and outcomes among stakeholders including students, parents, faculty, staff, board members, and alumni. Collaboration with the Provost’s Office will facilitate the hiring process for tenure track faculty, creating and increasing the size of a diverse pool of candidates for tenure track positions. Partnerships with Human Resources will facilitate creating and increasing the size of a diverse pool of candidates for staff positions. They will support the work of the Vice President for Enrollment and College Relations and the Admissions team in their external relationships with high schools, foundations and community-based organizations and will collaborate with the Admissions office to advance recruitment efforts that support the goals of equity and inclusion.
Strengthen community and belonging and further DEIB efforts at St. Olaf: The VPCB will be responsible for retaining a talented, dedicated, and experienced team. They will proactively identify and champion professional development and growth opportunities for St. Olaf faculty and staff to enable them to stay up to date in this fast-changing field. The VPCB will also develop individual mentoring relationships with staff members and strive to support and empower them in their continued personal and professional growth. They will provide vision, leadership and counsel on diversity initiatives, strategic planning, training, and education. They are responsible for leading the development and implementation of policies, programs, and initiatives that create and support a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment with a shared sense of belonging for faculty, staff, and students. They will be supported in this work by an Inclusion and Belonging leadership group comprised of appointees from a variety of divisions, including:
Create opportunities that facilitate an evolving culture of belonging and access: The VPCB will serve as a deeply knowledgeable resource and collaborator on issues such as recruitment and retention of underrepresented faculty, creation of an inclusive classroom environment, and questions of curricular evolution. The VPCB will listen actively and continually to learn from St. Olaf’s past and to educate the community on best practices for the future.
They will create and carry out events, professional development, presentations, and talks that provide outlets to discuss difficult topics. In close partnership with colleagues, the VPCB will work to understand and support all Oles as St. Olaf continues its work to become a community that belongs equally to everyone. In time, the VPCB will be known for signature programs and events that promote cultural awareness and intercultural engagement for all members of the campus community.
The VPCB will listen to constituents with deep empathy and with a targeted ear seeking out causes and remedies to marginalization. They will meet people where they are while encouraging self-reflection and personal growth. Furthermore, the VPCB will help facilitate an environment wherein all members of the St. Olaf community feel empowered to enact the changes needed to ensure that all feel welcomed, valued, and supported authentically.
Serve as a thought partner and relationship builder on- and off-campus: The VPCB will serve as an inclusive leader who seeks to understand the concerns, strengths, and interests of internal and external stakeholders and will educate the community on issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.
For the campus community, the VPCB will facilitate, develop and execute professional development and training opportunities to address anti-racism and other important diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. The VPCB will collaborate with intentionality; effectively communicate challenges, efforts and progress; amplify existing strengths; implement policies and programs; and build new campus initiatives while forging strong connections with students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The VPCB will work with the Board of Regents to ensure that the mission and strategic priorities of the college align with its desire to create a more inclusive, equitable, and just educational community.
The VPCB will work to grow and nurture relationships in Northfield, the Twin Cities, and beyond. They will seek to collaborate with colleges and universities, non-profit organizations, corporations, and community organizations on DEIB initiatives that further St. Olaf’s DEIB goals. As the college’s leading voice on DEIB, the VPCB will represent St. Olaf’s interests as an invited speaker, lecturer, panelist, and ambassador and should maintain membership and activity in professional organizations.
