    ASSISTANT SPECIAL SERVICES DIRECTOR

    Job Goal(s): To assist the Special Services Director in the provision of appropriate educational programming and services for students.

    Qualifications

    • A minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in Special Education.
    • Valid State of Maine certificate for position (035/030)
    • Criminal History Records Check (CHRC)
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including students, parents, staff, and community members.
    • Knowledge of special education law and all pertinent legal requirements at both the state and federal levels.

    Certifications

    • Valid State of Maine certificate for position (035/030)
    • Criminal History Records Check (CHRC)

    Performance Responsibilities

    • Attends and/or chairs Individual Education Planning (IEP) meetings involving state agency clients, special education students, and potential special education students.
    • Communicates and collaborates with building principals, teachers, and specialists in regard to the needs of students in special education and around state agency client needs.
    • Assists with coordination and development of professional development and continuous coaching programs for professional and support staff.
    • Coordinates compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
    • Investigate alternative programming solutions for out-of-district placement for state agency clients and special education students.
    • Assists in the development of Responses to Intervention programs.
    • Assists in the collection of data using scientifically based assessments and methodologies to close the achievement gap.
    • Chairs IEP meetings in all programs, holding the authority to commit district funds.
    • Contributes to the development of the special services general budget and Local Entitlement Grant projects.
    • Evaluates educational technicians in self-contained programs (Day Treatment and Adaptive Skills).
    • Coordinates the interview process for applicants in special education positions.
    • Works with the Extended School Year coordinator in the development of the ESY program, including budget development.
    • Coordinates or oversees the coordination of related services, including telepractice services.
    • Assists Special Services Coordinators in capacity building with staff, addressing case management responsibilities, compliance, and results driven outcomes for students.
    • Serves as a member of the Special Services Advisory Committee.
    • Performs other duties as requested by the Special Services Director.

    Working Schedule

    • Full-time, salaried, year-round schedule

    Travel Requirments

    • Travel between schools and district buildings is required.

    Education

    • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Special Education, or related field from an accredited college or university

    Experience

    • A minimum of 5 years experience in special education programming (teacher, related service provider).
    • A minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in Special Education.

    Reports To: Special Services Director

    Terms of Employment: 260 days per year; 8 hours per day; salary determined annually by the Board of Directors.

    Evaluation: Completed annually by the Special Services Director or their designee.
