    Special Information: Missoula Correctional Services, Inc. is a non-profit corporation formed to provide alternative correctional programs in the Missoula community. The mission of the Misdemeanor Supervision Program is to provide a sentencing alternative to the Courts that reduces the likelihood of offenders committing more crimes by monitoring their compliance with sentencing conditions ordered by the Court.

    The position requires a current State of Montana driver’s license. Mental demands are paramount due to the intensity of the work. Physical demands include the ability to restrain an offender in a crisis situation and the ability to respond physically in an emergency situation as the position shares on-call responsibility to the program and the offenders supervised. Therefore, the Misdemeanor Supervision Officer needs to be in good physical condition and mobile.

    There are currently one position available. The regular work schedule is:

    Monday through Friday: 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. (Possible changes will be discussed in interview)

    The officer must be willing to be somewhat flexible in the work schedule due to the needs of the court, program, and clientele.

    This position is considered essential, and you will be considered an essential employee. As such, you will be required to report to work or continue to work during the COVID-19 pandemic and any shelter in place directives issued by the Governor or the Missoula City-County Health Department.

    Agency Description: The Misdemeanor Supervision Program’s goal is to hold an offender accountable for his/her crime through the monitoring of an offender’s court-ordered attendance at treatment, use of drugs and alcohol, maintenance of employment/training, payment of restitution and fines, and movement within the community.

    Typical Duties (not all inclusive): The Misdemeanor Supervision Officer conducts intake interviews with offenders, reviews all program requirements with the offender and contracts his responsibility to the program. The Misdemeanor Supervision Officer is responsible for monitoring each offender’s compliance to his court order. This is accomplished by contacting outside counseling agencies; taking and testing urinalysis samples; taking breathalyzer tests; utilizing visual breathalyzer units and TAD units; utilizing GPS monitoring units; contacting employers, trainers, or teachers; searching an offender’s person and property; and tracking payment of supervision fees. The Misdemeanor Supervision Officer keeps documentation and concise notes on all actions taken with and on behalf of the offender; notifies the court of an offender’s completing conditions mandated; and investigates alleged violations of probation. The officer prepares reports for any alleged violations and obtains a Warrant for arrest for non-compliance when necessary.

    The Misdemeanor Supervision Officer meets with community agencies to coordinate services; and is responsible for maintaining a referral mechanism and professional relationship with the courts and other correctional agencies. The Misdemeanor Supervision Officer shares on-call responsibility with other Misdemeanor Supervision Officers and Pretrial Supervision Officers to provide 24-hour per day availability for emergency situations.

    The Misdemeanor Supervision Officer maintains statistical records of clients received, types of crimes which led the court to ordered supervision, etc. with the assistance of the Administrative Aid. These statistics will be used by the supervisor to compile and submit required reports to the Executive Director of Missoula Correctional Services.

    Qualifications: Knowledge of the Missoula community and community resources; Montana’s correctional system--its organization and methods of operating; treatment principles in working with an offender population; behavior modification; and organizational skills for prioritizing workload and handling personal stress. Must possess typing skills and an introductory level of computer and word processing knowledge and skills. Ability to physically respond in an emergency situation, including the ability to restrain an offender if necessary; effectively communicate orally and in writing; objectively assess individual needs and attend to the details of monitoring individual programs; operate a motor vehicle; follow written and oral instructions explicitly, and perform accurate and thorough work; act with initiative, exercise good judgment, and model good leadership; maintain effective working relationships with employees, offenders, the public, and other agencies; consistently apply rules and regulations and follow agency policies and procedures; function effectively under stressful conditions.

    Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or a related Human Service field of study and two years of experience in the area of criminal justice. Experience in another human service field may be considered. The Bachelor’s degree must be from a university accredited by a regional accreditation organization recognized by the U. S. Department of Education. An applicant that does not meet the experience required may be considered for an extended training position with a lesser salary.

    Application and Selection Process: Selection procedures to be used in evaluating applicants’ qualifications may include, but are not limited to, an evaluation of the Application form; letter of interest; the employee’s performance record in current MCS position held; a structured interview; a written questionnaire; a performance test, and reference checks. Application materials required are:

    1. Signed and completed Application form. Portions of the Application form may be photocopied if legible.

    2. Applicants claiming Handicapped Person’s Employment Preference must provided verification of eligibility with the Application materials. The required documentation includes the SRS Certification of Disability form.

    3. Copy of college transcripts.

    The successful candidate must attend and complete MCS’ required Probation Basic course.

    The successful candidate must pass a thorough background investigation. The applicant must also be found to be insurable via a check with the Montana Motor Vehicles’ Records Department. Upon offer of employment, the candidate will be required to take and pass a physical examination which demonstrates that the applicant is capable of performing the physical required duties of this position. The applicant will be required to take a TB test as well as sign a Non-Dissemination and Non-Solicitation Agreement.

    The successful candidate will be required to obtain a Frist Aid/CPR card within the first six months of employment.

    Compensation: This position’s salary is $43,680 the first six months $45,760 annually thereafter. Benefits include ten (10) working days of annual leave, sick leave, and ten (10) days of holiday leave per year, medical insurance and a retirement plan.

    Immigration Reform and Control Act: In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, if an employee is unable to provide the required document or documents within three days, he or she must at least produce (within three days) a receipt showing that he/she has applied for the document. The employee must produce the document itself within 21 days of hire. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver’s license or other picture I.D., a U.S. passport or a green card.
