The Licensed Counselor will deliver vital psychological support to students through comprehensive individual and group counseling, swift crisis intervention, and seamless connections to psychiatric and medical support when necessary—spearheaded the creation and execution of impactful outreach initiatives, serving as an invaluable resource and educator for students and employees alike. Oversee the meticulous development and execution of outreach endeavors while tracking data that demonstrate improvements in services rendered by the Counseling, Accessibility, and Resource Office.     Examples of Duties

    • Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to students enrolled at Durham Technical Community College;
    • Maintain standards of counseling or standards of other mental health disciplines;
    • Document and maintain records in accordance with state requirements and professional discipline standards. Documentation must be accurate, complete, appropriate, timely, and legible.
    • Assist in the maintenance of accurate documentation and student records through the accessibility services software system;
    • Support the early success system referral process by providing counseling assistance to students in need;
    • Coordinate and implement workshops for students focused on the improvement of academics and other life skills for students;
    • Coordinate and implement workshops for college employees focused on increasing awareness of and sensitivity to disabilities and common student challenges;
    • Interface with academic departments, other college offices, and student groups to assess program needs and develop appropriate responses;
    • Ensure proper security for Durham Tech’s student educational records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), state law, NC Community College System regulations, and college policies and procedures;
    • Assist in the planning, development and implementation of community outreach and campus programs to help facilitate learning, and promote a greater understanding of counseling and accessibility resources;
    • Create a welcoming and positive environment for students, visitors, and community members;
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to keep up to date on current college practices, regulations, student information system processes, communications management, and customer service;
    • Establish and maintain liaison with mental health service providers and community resources;
    • Assist with the collection of and review disability assessment documentation for students with specific disabilities and provide recommendations for academic accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), federal or state regulations, and college procedures;
    • Supervise and evaluate the performance of master’s and doctoral level interns/trainees and recommend necessary action;
    • Review case records for interns/trainees;
    • Actively participate as part of the office’s team in planning and decision-making for the Counseling, Accessibility, and Resources office;
    • Maintain strategic objectives established by departmental unit and college mission;
    • Participate in appropriate student services division and college-wide committees and meetings;
    • Compile and publish regular counseling services newsletters;
    • Additional duties shall include other appropriate activities as assigned by the director, dean, vice president, and/or the president.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, education, psychology, social work or related field.

    Be a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor and/or Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor.

    Work Experience:

    Two years of counseling experience.

    • A thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System;
    • Relevance of psychotherapeutic experience to anticipated college population in counseling, psychology, and other mental health disciplines;
    • Ability to facilitate specialized therapeutic groups. Examples: Substance Abuse, Anger Management and Sexual Assault;
    • Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and other relevant laws;
    • Evidence of strong interpersonal, problem solving and critical thinking skills;
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
    • Ability to think creatively and effectuate ideas into action;
    • Proven ability to be a team player, and contribute positively to a diverse, multi-ethnic, multicultural student population and campus environment;
    • Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective counseling;
    • Ability to facilitate campus wide and community-based presentations;
    • Working knowledge of mental health issues, conflict resolution/mediation practices and crisis intervention;
    • Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality;
    • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs, and services for students;
    • Competence in computer technologies, such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation programs and student information management systems;
    • Commitment to working with, and supporting the needs of, a diverse population;
    • Ability to work collaboratively with employees in providing services to students;
    • Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students and colleagues;
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community;
    • Ability to work flexible hours including some evening and weekend hours consistent with student need;
    • Attention to detail; and
    • Ability to provide excellent customer service to students and community members.
