Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Undergraduate Curricula (OUC) plays an important role as one of several units in the College of Arts & Sciences dedicated to shaping and enriching the educational experience of UNC-Chapel Hill’s undergraduate students. We support the University’s core mission of teaching by managing the undergraduate curriculum so that Carolina students may benefit from an outstanding, research-based, academically enriching undergraduate curriculum. The office supports faculty, administrators, and staff with the submission and approval process for all undergraduate curriculum proposals, including degree programs, majors, minors, concentrations, and undergraduate courses. It also oversees the faculty approval process for curriculum-related academic policies through its support of the College’s Administrative Boards and sub-committees.
The Office collaborates with several campus units to provide resources and tools to help support the maintenance, processes, and assessment of the curriculum. This includes a syllabus repository for faculty, an independent study learning contract submission form and approval workflow, curriculum- and student-related reporting dashboards, a course evaluation system, a transfer course re-evaluation submission and approval process, and an annual syllabus and learning contract assessment review.
In addition, the Office provides leadership and support for several committees and administrative roles on campus that engage with and/or impact the curriculum, academic programs, policies, and procedures. This includes Directors of Undergraduate Studies (faculty positions), Student Services Managers, the College’s Administrative Boards and sub-committees, Education Policy Committee, General Education Oversight Committee, Course Substitution Committee, New Student Orientation Committee, the Sitterson Teaching Award Committee, and implementation committees for new systems related to the undergraduate curricula.
Position Summary
As a member of a dynamic team of administrators and faculty (4 full-time staff; 3 part-time faculty), this position is responsible for administering all aspects of the Curriculum Inventory Management (CIM) system and maintaining accurate records of all curriculum proposals that are reviewed by the Office of Undergraduate Curricula and the College’s Administrative Boards (faculty committee). The CIM system is used by all academic units at the University (schools and departments) to submit both course proposals and programs proposals (degrees, majors, minors, concentrations). Managing the CIM system includes several key elements:
- Reviewing all curriculum proposals (including syllabi) for accuracy and completeness.
- Routing proposals to the appropriate faculty committee(s) and administrators for review and approval.
- Documenting all approvals, feedback, revision requests, and rejections from ommittees/administrators and transmitting this information to CIM to maintain accurate records for compliance and accrediting purposes.
- Communicating regularly with academic units when curriculum proposals are stalled or pending review.
- In conjunction with the Registrar’s Curriculum Division, providing training and onboarding to new staff and faculty and maintaining training resources.
This position is responsible for managing the content and maintenance of several websites (currently using Wordpress), including the websites for the Office of Undergraduate Curricula, the College’s Administrative Boards, and the new IDEAs in Action General Education curriculum. This position also develops, publishes, and administers several online forms (e.g. using Qualtrics and Gravity Forms through WordPress) to help track and manage processes and special programs within Undergraduate Education.
This position also provides leadership, oversight, and support for the following processes and programs that are related to the undergraduate curriculum:
- Course petition process for the General Education curriculum.
- Syllabus repository system.
- Independent Study Learning Contract submission and approval system.
- Annual syllabus and learning contract assessment review.
- Special studies undergraduate internship course (application process and submission of final work products)
Finally, this position will provide administrative support for the Interdisciplinary Studies major, the Administrative Boards and its sub-committees, and special projects for the Curriculum Director, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Curricula, and the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
