Curriculum Specialist designs and develops training programs, curriculum, methods, and materials for various audiences, including employees, managers, customers, or other learners. Conducts skill assessments and collects input to identify training or development needs, goals, gaps, and requirements. Being a Curriculum Specialist consults with subject matter experts to define learning objectives and to design appropriate course content and training curriculum. Develops curricula supporting defined competency models or skill frameworks. Additionally, Curriculum Specialist writes and edits outlines, syllabus, lecture notes, and materials for in-person or online courses and self-study programs. Evaluates the software or collaboration tools to be selected for training. Establishes metrics to use to evaluate training effectiveness. May collaborate with vendors that provide training materials or conduct training. May coach trainers. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Curriculum Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.   • Position Summary

    The Teacher Education Curriculum / Professional Development Specialist will work closely with the Senior Director of Teacher Education to plan and design educational program curricula and research and define educational goals, objectives, and methodologies to meet the goals of the San Juan College Teacher Education Program.

    This individual will provide specialized design and technical and operational support for the development of courses. Determine formats and approaches to achieve program and budget objectives;

    define needs of target populations; research trends at the national and state level, as appropriate to the position. Writes, edits, and coordinates the development of course catalogs, promotional materials, educational materials, training manuals, newsletters, and / or brochures, as appropriate to the program.

    The curriculum must be experiential and culturally relevant / sustaining to leverage the Grow Your Own and Earn While You Learn components of the program.

    MAJOR DUTIES

    • Works with stakeholders in planning, development, and design of curricula to meet program objectives, policies, and standards.
    • Responsible for any reporting requirements.
    • Serve as SJC Teacher Education Department liaison to curriculum committees of program partners, including districts and schools.
    • Serve as an editor for curriculum content processed by the Teacher Education Department, reviewing, editing, and proofreading content for grammar and punctuation usage, style, tone, quality, organization, and adherence to San Juan College standards.
    • Develop high-quality professional learning materials, including training sessions (in person and online), handouts, resources, and video recordings.
    • Continuously improve program structure and professional learning content by analyzing survey responses and observing others-led sessions.
    • Work with the Senior Director to ensure professional learning resources are customized to meet the specific goals of the Teacher Preparation Program and local schools / districts.
    • Assist with training & coaching team members so they can be effective Professional Development facilitators.
    • Designs materials for implementing professional development activities that address the training needs of ALP students, mentors, and teachers within local schools / districts.
    • Researches various topics (mentorship programs, courses, materials, etc.) to meet the training needs of teacher education students, staff, and licensed teachers.
    • Develops course curricula by researching assigned topics, designing face-to-face and online delivery training, and writing curricula, including facilitator manuals, participant manuals, prework, bridgework, online modules, and tests.
    • Provides writing support to staff by drafting original documents, such as website content, and by acting as an editor, proofreader, and writing coach.
    • Updates Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs) and Program Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs) to the San Juan College Curriculum Committee.
    • Submits new, revised, and archived courses and programs to the San Juan College Curriculum Committee and represents the department at SJC Curriculum Committee meetings as needed.
    • Provide consultative expertise and technical support to instigate and move curriculum changes through the faculty governance and / or administrative approval process.
    • Assist with faculty and staff training in the Canvas Learning Management system.
    • Provide as-needed assistance with tracking and communication regarding documents about academic Program Review and annual academic assessment.
    • Maintaining required files and records.
    • Serve on college committees related to online and blended instructional design and high-impact practices.
    • Attends regional and statewide articulation meetings and attends other training and workshops related to curriculum and articulation
    • Other duties related to curricular affairs as assigned (including but not limited to) : training and evaluation, Continuing Professional Education, Co-curriculum, and Accreditation.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

    • Knowledge of K-12 curriculum development, emphasizing first year teachers.
    • Knowledge of culturally relevant and sustaining teaching and curriculum development principles.
    • Knowledge of PED guidelines for teacher licensure in New Mexico.
    • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of Alternative Licensure Programs & mentorship needs.
    • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in creating a variety of materials appropriate for a diverse community.
    • Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records.
    • Deep understanding of the needs of new teachers and their mentors.
    • Experience creating adult learning sessions focused on culturally responsive teaching, high-leverage instructional practices, mentoring, and induction.
    • Knowledge of adult education principles and practices and adult education theory
    • Experience with Continuing Professional Education Programs
    • Skilled in decision-making and problem-solving
    • Skilled in interpersonal communication
    • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment

    SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

    The Senior Director of Teacher Education assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

    COMPLEXITY / SCOPE OF WORK

    • The work consists of varied specialized duties, requiring the ability to work independently and gather, synthesize, and integrate information from a variety of sources contributing to the complexity of the work.
    • The purpose of this position is to develop, review and revise training materials for Teacher Education programs, ensuring proper guidelines are followed and materials are appropriately aligned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • A Master’s Degree in Education, experience in Alternative Licensure Programs preferred, and / or administrative experience.
    • At least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
    • Knowledge of curriculum development principles, clinical / residency teacher training models, and culturally relevant / sustaining pedagogies.
    • Strong skills in instructional design for implementing course content within a Learning Management System (LMS) are essential for this position.
