Diabetes Educator educates patients on the necessary lifestyle changes involved in a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity and glucose testing. Collects patient data to monitor health status and proactively manage the patient's condition. Being a Diabetes Educator facilitates skill development and behavior modification so that the patient is able to successfully manage the disease. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Diabetes Educator typically required to be a Certified Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Diabetes Educator occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Pay: $38.91 - $60.31 / hour. Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience
Summary:Provides diabetes education to patients, caregivers, staff, and the community.
Responsibilities- Provides diabetes self-management education and training to patients with diabetes and their family members utilizing curriculum approved by the American Diabetes Association.
- Works collaboratively with multi-disciplinary diabetes care team to implement plan of care.
- Reinforces diabetes education and instruction to staff nurses and support staff.
- Develops and distributes educational materials to community.
- Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
- State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). Preferred: CDCES (Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist) as defined by the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE) or board certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES). Relevant life support certification as determined at position level.
- 2 years nursing experience.
- IF APPLICABLE: BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire.
