Diabetes Educator educates patients on the necessary lifestyle changes involved in a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity and glucose testing. Collects patient data to monitor health status and proactively manage the patient's condition. Being a Diabetes Educator facilitates skill development and behavior modification so that the patient is able to successfully manage the disease. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Diabetes Educator typically required to be a Certified Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Diabetes Educator occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Overview

    Collaborates with and is a member of the multidisciplinary team to develop and implement a treatment and self-management training plan for children with diabetes mellitus and their families; uses available resources of team members and the community; evaluates outcomes of the plan. Demonstrates clinical leadership, participates in CQI activities and conducts/participates in clinical research.

    Responsibilities

    • Meets the educational needs of the patient/family with diabetes mellitus utilizing principles of teaching and learning.
    • In collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, utilizes the nursing process to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family with diabetes mellitus which promotes optimal patient outcomes.
    • Participates with the Level II diabetes educator (CDE)to provide clinical resources for the education and consultation needs of the professional and lay communities.
    • Participates in clinical research in the field of diabetes mellitus.

    Qualifications

    • Associate's Degree Current employees hired before September 1, 2013 are grandfathered and permitted to continue in the direct care nursing role.
      • and 3-5 years experience
      • Diabetes experience is preferred
    • Bachelor's Degree Preferred for all direct care nurses hired after September 1, 2013. Direct care nurses hired after this date without a BSN, must complete their degree within 5 years of their hire date.
      • and 1-2 years experience
    • One of the following: Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
    • One of the following: Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
    • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
    • NCBDE Certification Preferred

    Starting Pay

    Our pay ranges are market competitive. The pay range for this job begins at $30.47/hr, but your offer will be determined based on your education and experience.

     

     

    Remote Work/Work from Home

    This position is not eligible to work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children’s Mercy locations and may not work from home.
