Diabetes Educator educates patients on the necessary lifestyle changes involved in a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity and glucose testing. Collects patient data to monitor health status and proactively manage the patient's condition. Being a Diabetes Educator facilitates skill development and behavior modification so that the patient is able to successfully manage the disease. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Diabetes Educator typically required to be a Certified Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Diabetes Educator occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     • Identifies individual patient needs and assists the patient and patient's family in establishing treatment goals.
    • Participates in the diabetes program with multidisciplinary team to assess and provide culturally relevant care for patients living with diabetes.
    • Provides technical assistance and guidance in planning, implementation and evaluation of continuing education programs for all nursing personnel at the facility.
    • Participates in interim and health care delivery systems which might cause or explain any variations.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    Basic Requirement(s)

    Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

    Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

    Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: -Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; OR -At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

    In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

    Minimum Qualifications

    Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

    GS-11: one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, bachelor?s degree, or master?s degree from a professional nursing educational program. Examples Include: Identifying patients? needs and assisting the patient and the patient?s family in establishing treatment goals; Writing updates and revising care plans for patients in collaboration with other teams members; Participating in the diabetes program with multidisciplinary team to assess and provide culturally relevant care for patients living with diabetes; Providing technical assistance with guidance in planning, implementing and evaluation of continuing education training programs on a continuous basis; Participating in interim and annual comprehensive diabetes audit.

    Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only)

    Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

    Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption.     Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
