Director of International Education leads and directs all aspects of the institution's international programs. Oversees programs, activities, faculty affairs, and academic support services. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Director of International Education and Services will work with the Associate Provost to provide leadership in areas impacting Bowie State University’s global presence, and will contribute to the establishment of the strategic vision of the office and work across all academic and administrative units to establish BSU’s global education strategy. She/He will work to facilitate a deeper engagement of BSU’s students and faculty with partners around the world, while growing the University’s international visibility and reputation. The Director will be expected to provide outstanding leadership, supervision, and guidance to a team of three to four professionals in the office of International Education and Student Services, and will lead BSU’s international education and services that are designed to provide an efficient, supportive and welcoming infrastructure for students and scholars engaged in international education. These services include, but are not limited to:- Support the colleges’ international efforts in strengthening BSU as a gateway for global partners and for visiting international delegations, scholars, fellows, and exchange students.
- Provide expertise on immigration policy.
- Coordinate a partnership supporting the recruitment, preparation, retention and success of international students.
- Engage with international students and scholars and remain current on all immigration rules and regulations affecting students.
- Represent the office of International Education and Services on all matters related to immigration compliance impacting international students.
- Take the lead in designing and delivering high-quality ad-hoc survey assessments of the international community’s interactions with the office and ensure the office of IESS is providing outstanding service to students.
- Take the lead in identifying international students’ needs and implement workshops, webinars, or other high-impact sessions that facilitate students’ understanding of the immigration arena and how it may impact their future careers.
- Serve as BSU’s student liaison to federal government agencies, including DHS, Department of State, ICE, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on matters impacting international students.
- Work with the appropriate office to design and deliver an annual international student and scholars statistics report to be disseminated to the campus community at the end of each academic year.
- Provide data and other relevant reports as needed.
- Provide fiscal oversight and management of the office’s budget; and
- Lead efforts for grant sourcing in support of international efforts for faculty and students.
Minimum QualificationsEducation- A PhD or terminal professional degree (Preferred);
- Degree substitute: Master’s degree with 5 years of direct experience in international student services.
Experience- Five years of professional experience in academic administration, with particular emphasis on international student services.
- Significant and progressive administrative and management experience including, but not limited to personnel management, budget management, program analysis, and reporting.
- Significant and progressive experience and knowledge of best practices in one or more of the International Office’s primary areas of responsibilities (e.g. international student recruiting and admissions, international student services, exchange programs, visa issuance, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience of collaborative engagement with a breadth of internal and external constituencies to achieve strategic or programmatic goals. This includes demonstration of strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- International experience studying and/or working abroad.
Experience working with underrepresented students to foster inclusion and access, or similar experience serving minority populations. - Experience as a DSO or PDSO.
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed, being a positive, collegial, and proactive representative of Bowie State University.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities- USCIS regulations and policies;
- SEVIS‐related processes and federal regulations and reporting requirements that apply to international students;
- Supporting relevant information technology and software systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Banner, Terra Dotta, and Cognos).
- A thorough understanding of standards, processes, and best practices in study abroad and international student and scholar services.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:As with all BSU Employees, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they will be referred to the proper service within the Student Wellness Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Wellness Center, the Dean of Student Affairs or the appropriate law enforcement agency.

OtherPURPOSE: The Director of International Education and Services provides leadership to, and professional support for all Bowie State University efforts supporting international students’ and scholars’ services. The Director will play a key role as part of the International Office team. The International Office is the lead campus organization for oversight, management, and development of a broad range of international activities including: international student and faculty exchange programs, study abroad opportunities, undergraduate and graduate international recruiting and admissions, immigration policies and procedures compliance, support for international visiting scholars, support and advising for all international students, and support and advising for all students and faculty traveling abroad.The Director will possess a record of accomplishments in providing a bold and strategic leadership for an international office. She/He will provide internal communication to raise awareness of BSU’s global endeavors and interact with key internal stakeholders to lead the internationalization of the campus. Externally, the Director will represent Bowie State University to partner institutions, foundations, and consortia and will cultivate relationships to place our students internationally, attract global learners, stimulate international research, grow funding for international study, and enhance BSU’s international reputation.
Challenges and opportunities:The Director will have a unique opportunity to lead a team of advisors and to set a clear vision for promoting the global student body and its opportunities on the BSU campus. The incoming Director of International Educational and Student Services will need to quickly and effectively assess the areas of deficiency impacting the international student community at BSU. The Director will be charged with ensuring that the team is properly cross-trained on the entire spectrum of student advising for efficiency and practical purposes. Furthermore, the Director will need to think critically about ways to digitalize the office in its entirety.
