Exercise Physiologist develops, implements, and evaluates exercise programs for patients. Conducts testing that assesses cardiovascular and metabolic effects of exercise for cardiac and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Being an Exercise Physiologist follows testing protocols and selects appropriate testing protocol for the patient. Monitors patient during testing. Additionally, Exercise Physiologist calculates and records testing results. Coordinates with cross-functional patient care teams. May design exercise prescriptions, instructional materials, home exercise guidelines, and discharge instructions. Conducts exercise training sessions for patients. Requires a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology. Typically reports to a manager. The Exercise Physiologist work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     Hours: Part-time (0.6 FTE, 48 hours per biweekly pay period) – MWF 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with 30- minute meal period

    Description:

    Position Overview: The Cardiac Services Exercise Physiologist (EP) is responsible for assessing, care planning, patient education and treatment for patients receiving cardiac rehabilitation services.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Is part of a comprehensive team that includes Cardiologists, Primary Care Providers (PCPs), and Cardiac Services Director – RN that provides cardiac rehab support and education that is tailored to the patient’s conditions, needs, interests and motivations.
    • Admits and discharges patients.
    • Manages rehab referrals.
    • Completes assessment of patient and appropriately documents into patient chart.
    • Creates Individualized Treatment Plans (ITPs), ensures treatment plans are up to date throughout program, and monitors outcomes and discharge plans on cardiac rehab patients.
    • Educates patients on choices for optimal activities of daily living, including but not limited to diet, exercise, nutrition counseling, medication management, etc.
    • Leads and monitors patients during exercise, providing encouragement, correction, and support during their treatments.
    • Administers medication during treatment and as required in emergency situations.
    • Maintains progress notes and reports to the team on patients’ conditions and progress.
    • Provides follow-up to discharged patients or patients that have declined rehab.
    • Acts as a patient advocate.
    • Ensures department continues to run smoothly in the absence of the Cardiac Services Director.
    • Fosters an environment of continuous improvement, not just for the patients, but also for the department in whole.
    • Participates in quality initiatives, process improvements, and research activities to improve patient outcomes, patient experience, and patient safety.
    • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

    Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology or related field required. Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology preferred.
    • One year of cardiac rehab related experience preferred.

    Additional Qualifications:

    • Basic computer skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
    • Ability to communicate with confidence in a group setting.
    • Self-motivated.
    • Must be able to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate in English fluently.
    • Integrity and ability to work independently. Initiative to take on tasks without being told.

    • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage time efficiently.
    • Ability to operate technologies and equipment associated with this position.

    Licensure/Certification Required:

    • If no master’s degree, certification (or certification eligible) Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (or certification eligible within 2 years) through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional or Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certificate through the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) required within two years of hire.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS). BLS is not required for staff with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
    • Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation class preferred within six months of hire.
    • Certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)- certification preferred within six months of hire.
    • Certification Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS)- certification preferred within six months of hire.
    • Mandatory Reporter required within six months of hire.
