    Main Purpose of Job

    The� Geologist Supervisor will oversee the technical work of the Voluntary Cleanup Program staff assigned to sites located throughout Maryland. The incumbent in this position will work independently to ensure that decisions at sites in the Voluntary Cleanup Program are technically proficient and implemented in accordance with state law and policies. The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. The incumbent may be required to visit sites containing chemical and physical hazards. The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. Work involves special physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, etc. Site visits may require the employee to engage in physical demands to view a particular aspect of a site visit. Work requires the use of protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, mask, etc.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:�� A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science. Experience: Six years of experience performing professional geological work. Notes: 1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for the required education and one year of the required experience. 2.�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

    DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Supervisory experience; Experience with environmental investigation and/or remediation work; Excellent organizational skills; Experience working with environmental regulations, especially 'CERCLA - Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. VCP - Maryland Voluntary Cleanup Program.

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

    1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. 2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment, such as respiratory protection equipment. 2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazard Waste Operations and Emergency Response. 3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
