FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a FIRE CAPTAIN typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. The Full-time Captain will serve as part of the Fire Chief’s leadership team. The primary focus of this position is emergency readiness/preparedness i.e. training, apparatus, and supporting company-level operations. While on shift, the Captain will perform, direct, and lead operational-level activities, and make or assist in decision-making regarding fire department operations. This will include resource/personnel utilization and deployment during emergencies. Depending on available resources, the Captain will directly participate in suppression/mitigation efforts and ensure that operations are within the current department Standard Operating Procedures and Guidelines. The Captain may, when assigned, fill the roles and responsibilities of the Chief Officers, which may include staffing an assigned command car and direct responses.
