Fleet Manager manages the acquisition, operations, and maintenance of the organization's fleet of motor vehicles. Oversees scheduling and dispatch operations for vehicles and drivers. Being a Fleet Manager evaluates, purchases, leases, and disposes of vehicles to maintain the fleet. Develops and maintains vendor and service provider relationships for fuel, maintenance, and other essential services. Additionally, Fleet Manager administers insurance policy coverage, negotiates agreements, and participates in claim resolution. Develops and implements safety, preventive maintenance, and accident prevention programs. Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and fleet-specific regulations, licensing, registration, and reporting requirements. Manages the fleet expense reporting and budgets. May require a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Fleet Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. General Purpose:
Supervises Fleet Maintenance staff. Which includes mechanics performing routine repairs and maintenance of the city vehicles and/or equipment. Also the Administrative Assistant in their duties.

Under the general supervision of the City Manager
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Plans and conducts repair schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, by doing it personally, assigning to staff, or through outside vendors.
2) Assigns daily job duties and supervises subordinates.
3) Performs inventory control and restocking. Prepares Monthly Internal Service Reports.
4) Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air driven tools.
5) Major and complex tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.
6) Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
7) Major repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
8) Cuts and welds metal.
9) Performs complex changes and/or repairs tires and spin balances tires.
10) Conducts inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair, or replacement.
11) Provides field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
12) Maintains maintenance of vehicles and mechanical equipment.
13) Trains lower-level mechanic in more complex maintenance and repair activities.
15) Perform annual performance evaluations on subordinates.
16) Performs after-hours repairs on vehicles and equipment as required.
17) Performs other duties as assigned.
18) Responsible for the efficient operation of the Fleet Maintenance Dept.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Diesel Mechanics Trade School plus two (2) years mechanical experience or five (5) years of diesel/heavy equipment mechanical experience.
· A Minimum of (2) years supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A)
Knowledge of automotive mechanics; knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, generators and welding; price trends; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment
C) Ability to establish and maintain an effective maintenance program, and ability to conduct and assign projects for their completion.
D) Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
E) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
F) Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical work.
Requirements/Certifications/Licenses:
1) Valid New Mexico Class "B" CDL or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
2) Must successfully pass the pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
Equipment, Tools & Materials:
1) A variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric and air-driven tools for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lift, air tools and other tools required for repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles and electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment.
2) Personal computer, calculator, phone, mobile or portable radio, FAX and copy machines, tire repair machine, spin balance machine, brake lathe machine, and refrigerant recovery/recycle equipment.
3) All appropriate safety equipment.
