The University of Alaska Anchorage, Aviation Technology Division, Flight Operations department is currently recruiting for a full-time, benefitted, Certified Flight Instructor II position. This position is responsible for providing pilot ground and flight training to beginning and intermediate students using basic and complex single-engine airplanes. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English and possess a high level of work, systems, and aviation infrastructure related knowledge and technical skill. This is an evening CFI position. The flight instructor will be required to work the evening shift starting between noon and 3pm.

A Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) is a highly skilled and certified professional responsible for teaching aspiring pilots how to safely operate aircraft. CFIs play a critical role in the aviation industry by imparting knowledge and skills to individuals pursuing various levels of pilot certification. This full-time position involves instructing students in both ground-based and flight training sessions, ensuring they meet the necessary standards and requirements set by aviation authorities.

Key Responsibilities:

Flight Instruction: Provide hands-on flight instruction to students using a variety of aircraft, including single-engine and multi-engine aircraft, rotorcraft, and/or other specialized aircraft based on qualifications.

Ground Instruction: Conduct classroom-based ground instruction covering topics such as aerodynamics, navigation, aviation regulations, and aviation weather, among others.

Safety: Emphasize and enforce safety measures and practices in all flight and ground training activities, ensuring students learn to operate aircraft in a safe and responsible manner.

Lesson Planning: Develop lesson plans and training materials tailored to individual student needs, ensuring they progress through the curriculum effectively.

Assessment and Feedback: Regularly evaluate student progress through written tests, oral exams, and practical flight assessments. Provide constructive feedback and guidance for improvement.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, flight hours, and other required documentation for regulatory compliance.

Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed and ensure students are well-prepared for required written and practical exams, adhering to regulations and standards set by aviation authorities (e.g., FAA in the United States).

Aircraft Maintenance: Collaborate with maintenance personnel to report and address any aircraft maintenance issues or discrepancies promptly to maintain airworthiness.

Professional Development: Stay current with industry trends, aviation regulations, and instructional techniques by attending training and certification updates.

Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service by addressing student inquiries, concerns, and scheduling needs.

To thrive in this role, applicant is able to multitask, be personable with students, and adapt instructional practices to each learner. As well as fly proficiently and safely as a CFI.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess FAA Certified Flight Instructor credentials and the knowledge that those credentials imply, while also meeting the following criteria:

Familiarity with the following:
- Single-engine aircraft (basic and complex)
- Flight Training Devices
- Record Keeping Systems
- Aircraft, University, FAA and TSA Documents and Manuals

Must possess the following skills:
- Be able to communicate effectively and have a high level of technical knowledge and skills
- Be able to work effectively with individuals having diverse backgrounds and experience
- Be able to effectively evaluate a student’s learning progress based upon established standards of performance relative to the student’s experience and stage of development as a pilot
- Ability to work as part of a structured Part 141 University Flight School that uses standardized Flight and Ground Syllabi/TCOs, as well as standardized Maneuver Description Guides (MDG)

Must have and maintain a minimum of a FAA Second Class Medical Certificate.
Must meet the Pilot-In-Command recent flight experience requirements of 14 CFR part 61.57.
Associate degree (aviation-related preferred).
Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Airplane, Single Engine, Land.
Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor, Instrument (CFII).
Possess FAA Commercial Pilot, Airplane, Single-Engine Land Certificate or higher with Instrument Rating.

Must possess a valid driver's license (must meet and maintain UA safe driver verification criteria). 

Position Details:

This position is located at the Aviation Technology Complex on Merrill Field Airport, approximately two miles north of UAA's main campus, in Anchorage, AK. This is a full-time, term-funded, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
