    Position Description

This position is located within the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (NDCNR), Division of State Lands located in Carson City, Nevada.

As a member of the Nevada Tahoe Resource Team, this position is responsible for conducting inspections and implementing urban forestry projects on nearly 500 state-owned parcels in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Through collaboration and cooperative efforts with an interdisciplinary team, this position administers, coordinates, and oversees forest management activities of the Urban Lots Program including but not limited to hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed burning, debris and trash removal, weed identification and removal, and revegetation to promote sediment and erosion control, biodiversity, and wildlife habitat enhancement. Duties of the position include performing inspections, installing protective measures (e.g. signs, parking barriers, fences), writing forest management plans, initiating solicitations and contracts, preparing and maintaining budgets, planning and conducting data collection, coordinating crews for project work, monitoring crews and contractors for project compliance, writing comprehensive reports and assessments, and securing and managing external sources of funding for project implementation.

This position requires excellent public relations and outreach skills due to the nature of natural resources work in the urban environment at Lake Tahoe. The position makes frequent contact with landowners to address complaints and questions, and documents and facilitates resolutions for violations, encroachments, and hazardous conditions on state lands. The position also provides information to homeowners and residents on best management practices for natural resource protection including forest health, stewardship, wildlife habitat, defensible space, fuels reduction, and fire-resilient landscapes.

The position represents the Nevada Tahoe Resource Team and Division of State Lands at various meetings, workshops, events, and site visits regarding forest health and natural resource issues. The position provides technical assistance to federal, state, tribal, and local governments, and private landowners on hazardous fuels management, urban and community forestry, and watershed and forest stewardship. The duties of the position require the incumbent to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and agreements with agencies and organizations involved in resource management, fire protection, and emergency services.

Project management activities and inspections require regular travel throughout the Lake Tahoe region, the ability to work independently, and involve work in arduous terrain and inclement weather.

Nevada is almost entirely within the Basin and Range Province, and is broken up by many north-south mountain ranges. Most of these ranges have endorheic valleys between them, which belies the image portrayed by the term Great Basin. Much of the northern part of the state is within the Great Basin, a mild desert that experiences hot temperatures in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. Occasionally, moisture from the Arizona Monsoon will cause summer thunderstorms; Pacific storms may blanket the area with snow. The state's highest recorded temperature was 125 °F (52 °C) in Laughlin (e...
