Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice.     Summary

    Provides genetic counseling to patients with a medical or family history of pediatric or adult onset genetic diseases and coordinates program services.

    Responsibilities

    Collects, reviews and interprets family/medical histories, medical records, test results, and other relevant/necessary information. Coordinates testing and communicates results to referring healthcare provider.Researches, maintains, and applies knowledge of trends and developments in genetic disease research, testing, and treatment.Provides counseling and education to patients and their families. Identifies and provides referrals for testing, treatment, support, and advocacy.Develops genetic counseling plans, including risk assessment, referrals, education, life planning options, and treatment options.

Other Information: Requires a Certified Genetics Counselor (CGC) certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) within 12 months of employment.
