  • Overview

    The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Geology Unit within the Geotechnical Engineering Section. The AOT Geologist works on a diverse range of project types and has the opportunity to combine field, office, and lab work.

    Specific duties include characterizing the geologic properties of rock, including logging rock cores, performing bedrock competency evaluations, and providing technical recommendations on aggregates used in construction. An AOT Geologist participates in the design of programmed projects by collecting geologic field data, performing slope stability analyses and remediation design, as well as performs construction oversight in the field for slope remediation projects.

    An AOT Geologist also assists in maintaining the Agency's Rockfall Hazard Rating System by conducting field inspections, evaluating rock slopes for instability, and assisting with monitoring of unstable rock slopes by performing point cloud analysis. Additional opportunities include assisting the Geotechnical Section with collection and interpretation of geophysical data, such as seismic data to determine depths to bedrock.

    The Geotechnical Section is part of the Construction and Materials Bureau located at the Dill Facility in Berlin, VT. Support is provided to the Agency through project concept, design, construction, and maintenance. The ideal candidate will be detail and safety oriented, have excellent time management skills to accommodate shifting priorities, and possess strong oral and written communication skills. Some remote work will be possible.

    Environmental Factors

    Duties are largely performed in office and field setting. Incumbents should possess private means of transportation. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain, up and down ladders, and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular hours may be required. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree or higher in geology or geological engineering AND two (2) years or more of geology related work experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in transportation field.
