GRANT WRITER
$50,000 - $55,000 Salary; Exempt; Full-Time
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Grant Writer is responsible for researching, analyzing, identifying, and acquiring new funding sources from federal, state, local government as well as non-government grant opportunities to continuously develop, support and enhance the Catawba Nation’s programs, vision, and mission. It is imperative that the Grant Writer possess the ability to establish a strategic approach to meet both the Nation’s needs and priorities as well as the funder goals and objectives.
The primary responsibilities of this position include conducting research, writing, and presenting grant proposals while making timely and accurate grant application submissions. The Grant Writer works closely with the Nation’s program managers, Finance, and Grants & Compliance team members to ensure the successful development, implementation, and compliance of identified funding sources.
The Grant Writer reports to the Director of Grants & Compliance.
This position is responsible for and subject to the CIN Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Research, identify and present grant funding opportunities from both private and government sources that align with the funding needs and expectations of the Nation.
- Write clear, concise, and persuasive grant proposals that effectively communicate the Nation’s mission, goals, and objectives.
- Prepare, submit, and manage grant applications and any supporting documentation while ensuring they adhere to guidelines.
- Help develop strategic and comprehensive grant plans that both meet the short- and long-term goals of the Nation’s programs.
- Coordinate with the Grants and Compliance team to identify priority areas for funding development and ensure the progress of any submitted proposals are up to date and current.
- Work closely with Program Managers to understand their program’s financial needs to attain proper and adequate funding and provide them with all the grant materials needed for the successful grant administration.
- Plan and attend meetings to present grant and program options to relevant parties.
- Ensure the grant cycles are all compliant with federal agency rules and regulations and meet grant proposal requirements.
- Ensure the grant proposals and applications are submitted in a timely manner.
- Stay up to date on best practices of grant writing, federal, state, and local rules and regulations as well as the current principles and procedures of grants related matters.
- Assist with grant-reporting functions that may be requested by the Director of Grants and Compliance.
- Assist the Grants and Compliance team with:
o Reviewing and tracking of any existing grant and contract requirements and compliance matters.
o Retaining records and technical assistance of existing grants in ensuring the completion of any supplement requests and funding continuation.
o Maintenance of the comprehensive grant funding database to collect, track, and monitor the progress of all grant opportunities identified with their requirements, deadlines, and outcomes.
o Developing efficient use of resources and procedures as well as providing strategic recommendations and solutions to problems.
o Establishing and monitoring the implementation and maintenance of Grants Management Policies and Procedures.
- Prepare and submit monthly reports on grant-related activities and objectives.
- Develop and maintain records, grant materials, templates and SOPs for the Grants & Compliance department and other grant opportunities.
- Understand the history, structure, objectives, and financial needs of the Catawba Nation.
- Attend training, seminars, and classes as required.
- Maintain orderly and consistent files on all grants and contracts.
- Responsible for participating in site visits from Grantors.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Senior Leadership Team.

- Ability to interface with various members of the Division, Tribal Leadership including the Executive Committee, Tribal Administration, Director of Grants & Compliance and Program Directors and Managers of the primary government.
- Ability to proofread to ensure correct information presented with accuracy, completeness, clarity.
- Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment while also maintaining the ability to achieve accurate and highly competent results.
- Ability to plan, organize, initiate actionable items, and meet deadlines.
- Able to understand and maintain proficient knowledge of the Nation’s history and programs.
- Must possess the ability to work and maintain the highest degree of confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of the work.
- Must have strong attention to detail and be well organized in task completion.
- Must be able to work both independently and in collaborative settings.
- Technical competences related to MS Excel, MS Word, MS Office Applications and PDF Documents.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in formal grant writing as well as working in professional, administrative, business, or office environment;
- Associates Degree (English, financial, business, accounting, economics, or closely related field) or an additional two years of experience in formal grant writing.
- Typing Speed of at least 45 Words Per Minute (applicant may be tested).
- Strong working knowledge and skillset with Microsoft Office Suite, copier/printer/fax/scanner, phone, internet.
- Valid State Driver’s Licenses and clean Driving Record (have to meet requirements to be on company driver’s insurance policy).
- Must possess and demonstrate the competencies as listed above.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Experience working in a paperless environment or with paperless systems.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Higher in English, Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, or a closely related field from an Accredited College or University.
- 3-5 years of formal grant writing and professional experience with governmental entity, grant-funded entity, non-profit organization, or organization requiring fund accounting or grant reporting.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; bend to open/use lower drawers or cabinetry; to talk, hear, and see. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
