The Graphic Design Specialist performs highly responsible, advanced technical work in the conceptualization, design, and preparation of a wide range of communications and marketing materials; does related work as required. Facilitates maintenance, updating, and installation of hardware and software associated with aforementioned. This position is a multi-skilled position in a municipal Communications and Marketing department. The position produces work of a highly specialized nature requiring advanced technical ability and creativity in the coordination of developing and creating graphic elements and projects. As a graphics design expert, work at this level requires creativity and the exercise of a high degree of independent judgment and initiative. Work is reviewed and measured through written and verbal communications, periodic reports, observation of productivity, effectiveness, customer service standards, and levels of success accomplishing established progress and goals, and performance appraisals. The work is performed under the supervision of the Digital Communications Manager.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • The operation and maintenance of desktop publishing/computer graphics equipment and systems
    • Artistic principles, graphic design industry standards, and printing/production processes to manage all aspects of production of communication materials
    • Office terminology, procedures, and equipment
    • Proper English usage, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary
    • The principles and practices of public information, public relations, and marketing
    • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures
    • The use of digital photography, including the ability to manipulate images
    • Interacting with and preparing and presenting information for diverse audiences
    • Conceptualizing, planning, designing, preparing, and producing marketing and informational projects utilizing appropriate formatting and design techniques
    • Proofreading, detecting, and correcting errors, omissions, and other design, graphic, or structural errors
    • Operating standard office equipment including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities, with strong skill in the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, including Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, and knowledge and skill in the Microsoft Office Suite
    • Utilizing customer service and public relations techniques in responding to inquiries, complaints, and requests
    • Collaboration, coordination, organization, and teamwork
    • Communicate complex ideas effectively, clearly, and concisely, in oral, written, and electronic formats
    • Visually communicate a message or service to attract attention and promote impact, understanding, and retention of information
    • Give, understand, interpret, and execute complex oral and written instructions
    • Actively listen to and understand information and ideas presented verbally
    • Exercise sound, independent, professional judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions based on established policies, procedures, and guidelines
    • Simultaneously coordinate and manage multiple projects, to conceptualize, prioritize, and organize tasks and objectives in order to meet firm deadlines, and to shift priorities when customer needs change
    • Improve and maintain a working environment that is characterized by efficiency, cooperation, and positive interpersonal relationships that extend to all City departments
    • Accept personal accountability/responsibility for outcomes
    • Work independently with little oversight and with supervisor and coworkers using teamwork approaches
    • Work quickly and efficiently, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, in a fast-paced work environment under constant interruptions and tight or competing deadlines
    • Deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions
    • Prepare and present accurate and reliable oral and written reports, recommendations, and presentations following necessary research and analysis
    • Fulfill all duties with ethical conduct, individual initiative, creative problem solving, responsive service, and personal integrity.
    • Demonstrate professional work habits including reliability, dependability, punctuality, adaptability, creativity, and enthusiasm for the job
    • Interact professionally and cooperatively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, City officials, media representatives, members of the business community, the general public, and all those encountered in the course of work
    • Ability to provide clear & explicit instructions orally & written; ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships
    • Possession of a valid driver's license is required

    Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Graphics Design, Media/Graphic Arts, Visual Communication, or related field is preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of progressively knowledgeable and increasingly responsible experience in graphics or design. Pre-employment physical, and background check required.
