Head Nurse plans and implements the overall nursing policies, procedures, and services for a unit. Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training clinical staff. Being a Head Nurse ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensure, certifications, and other annual training. May provide direct patient care and is responsible for assessing, planning, and evaluating patients. Additionally, Head Nurse requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Typically requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • Responsibilities and Duties


    Health:
    • Assess sick children, including those with head lice and provide isolation when appropriate, but never leaving a sick child alone
    • Supervise the administration and storage of children’s medication, and medical procedures, including staff training when needed ensuring proper policies and procedures are followed
    • Work with families, primary care physicians and Head Start staff to develop and implement individualized health care plans and/or emergency care plans for children identified as needing such
    • Assist with enrollment of participant into the program, helping to secure all needed health screenings, exams and information and document in the data tracking software
    • Collaborate with health assistant, home visitors, advocates and teachers to ensure all health needs are being communicated with the family
    • Provide training and guidance to parents and community members on a variety of pertinent topics in the area of health and safety including developmentally appropriate classroom experiences as necessary
    • Work with Health Manager to provide a planned program of experience and activities, which enhance the parental role as the primary influence in their child’s development
    • Participate in the Health Services Advisory Committee and utilize the Committee in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the health content area
    • Provide basic care to sick or injured staff when workplace incidents occur
    Monitoring, tracking, and record keeping:
    • Supervise the implementation of all early childhood health services including but not limited to:

    Complete hearing and vision screenings, maintain complete heath records and confidentiality of all records, up-to-date height and weight measurements records, monitor immunization status of program children

    • Maintain an ongoing system of health tracking via written files and computer files
    • Provide complete documentation monthly      
    Supervision:
    • Supervise direct report staff (2 health assistants) by monitoring performance, providing staff development/training, and conducting performance evaluations 
    • Collaborate with the Health Manager to participate in the hiring process for health staff

    Qualifications


    • Indiana Registered Nurse; or RN willing to obtain an Indiana License within (60) working days; or in the absence of a qualified Registered Nurse Applicant
    • Hold or obtain a First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of hire and maintain current certifications
    • Knowledge of and interest in child and family health care, which includes preventive, early intervention, and health maintenance practices
    • Highly organized with the ability to work unsupervised to accomplish tasks as needed
    • Attention to detail, with accuracy in record keeping and data entry
    • Dependability, punctuality, flexibility and time management skills are required
    • Ability to communicate with children, parents, community providers and staff in a professional manner.
    • Ability to safely and physically transport a preschool/toddler/infant child; vision and hearing adequate to supervise children
    • Ability to be flexible; work as a member of a cooperative team, or independently when needed
    • Computer literate, with skills sufficient to work in the tracking system and generate letters, etc
