Head Nurse plans and implements the overall nursing policies, procedures, and services for a unit. Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training clinical staff. Being a Head Nurse ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensure, certifications, and other annual training. May provide direct patient care and is responsible for assessing, planning, and evaluating patients. Additionally, Head Nurse requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Typically requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     KEY FUNCTIONS

    Protocol Management:

    Assumes responsibility for the effective operation of research protocols in collaboration with the principal investigator and study sponsor.
    If required by the protocol, ensures capture of research-associated tests and procedure charges to the research financial account.
    Assesses patients for protocol eligibility through personal interviews and/or medical record review in inpatient and outpatient settings.
    On a real-time basis, assesses the patient’s clinical status; coordinates, evaluates and follows the patient’s participation in clinical trials.

    Collaborates with the entire medical care team as necessary.
    Provides documentation in the patient’s medical record, protocol specific documents, and institutional requirements.
    Communicates availability of protocol treatments for accrual.
    Participates in the development and maintenance of the protocol-specific order sets.
    Maintains the institutional patient regulatory protocol requirements.
    Notifies clinical and/or research laboratories of protocol-required laboratory tests including EKGs, PKs, PDs, urine collection, etc.
    Prepares orders for protocol-related tests, procedures, consults, requests for pathology slides and blocks as needed.

    Protocol Data:

    Assists the primary investigator in collection and evaluation of data.
    Oversees protocol-related data documentation in the medical record.
    Reviews patient response to treatment, treatment toxicities and adverse drug reactions with the principal investigator.
    Reports to the Institutional Review Board and the study sponsor.
    Provides protocol summary reports as requested.

    Patient Education & Professional Education:

    Identifies patient and family educational needs regarding treatment management, evaluation and follow-up in clinical trials through talking with patients person-to-person or by telephone and provides appropriate education and/or educational materials.
    Ensures human subjects protection in accordance with federal, state and institutional requirements.
    Facilitates the patient’s provision of initial informed consent and re-consent.
    Addresses research participants’ inquiries and concerns.
    Provides professional and ancillary staff education concerning research protocols by preparing in-service materials.
    Provides accurate information as requested to the multidisciplinary team.
    Keeps current concerning oncology and research study management issues through reading and/or attending meetings/in-services.

    Training and Mentoring:

    Under the direction of the Research Nurse Manager, the Sr. Research Nurse will aid in mentoring, training, and development of new research team members (transfers and new hires).
    Serves as a resource to team members and guides team in the absence of the Research Nurse Manager.
    Proactively seeks out educational opportunities and share knowledge learned with the research team.
    Develops research documents and tools to aid in successfully meeting clinical trial requirements.
    Participates in professional activities beyond the departmental level.
    Assists in identifying deficient areas of the program and communicate these deficiencies along with potential resolutions to the Research Nurse Manager(s).
    Identifies, communicates, and aids in SOP development and establishment of guidelines and processes in an effort to improve efficiency and overall conduct of the research program. 

    EDUCATION

    Required:

    Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.  

    EXPERIENCE

    Required:

    Two years of registered nurse experience.

    Preferred:

    Prior Research Nurse experience.

    Experience with Phase I studies.   

    LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

    Required:

    Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN). 

    Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

    Preferred:

    American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
