Ensures integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Health Underwriting Manager participates in the development of master policies and other official documents. Verifies that the account contracts are in compliance with government regulations. Additionally, Health Underwriting Manager typically is a RN with clinical experience. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Health Underwriting Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Health Underwriting Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     About The Role 

    We are currently searching for a Director, Underwriting for our US Managing General Agency (MGA). This role will be reporting to the VP, Underwriting of the MGA with responsibility of managing a team of underwriters and underwriting assistants and developing and managing a profitable book of business.  

     

    The ideal candidate will be an experienced collaborator and leader, a naturally customer-focused individual, with experience in sports insurance; you will join an organization going through significant growth, and a digital transformation. Players Health instills a mindset of ownership and accountability with all team members providing a playbook for best practices- defining expectations to meet the vision and strategy for profitable growth.  

      

    Candidates will come with 7 years of experience managing a team of underwriters and building a profitable book of business. You will be responsible for contributing to the achievement of the business plan, including new business, renewal retention, pricing, and profitability. The role comes with a salary commensurate with skills and experience, ranging between $140,000 – 240,000.

    Responsibilities (are inclusive of but not limited to): 

    • Meet profitability, retention, and written premium goals determined by the company.  
    • Make independent decisions within underwriting letter of authority and maintains proper file documentation. 
    • Assist in developing annual business goals for assigned agents/producers. Responsible for analyzing results and maintaining accountability of agency partners within the department. 
    • Lead and direct a team of underwriters, with an emphasis on coaching, learning and development, accountability, talent management, and succession planning. Build a creative and collaborative atmosphere that includes problem-solving to overcome obstacles and challenges. 
    • Evaluate job performance and mentor MGA staff. Oversee salary and performance management process and manage within department’s salary budget. Proactively plan staffing needs. 
    • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of sports & fitness segment products and services. 
    • Develop long-term and fruitful relationships with brokers and agents to develop and add to a profitable book of business.  
    • Demonstrate strong analytical and decision-making ability 
    • Work within broad limits and authorities on complex assignments. 
    • Clearly articulate the Players Health value proposition and risk appetite to brokers and agents. 
    • Drive organizational and operational changes to help drive business results and deliver our mission. 
    • Represent Players Health in the marketplace (key customers, brokers, associations, regulators) 
    • Establish and maintain new and existing agency and brokerage relationships. 
    • Develop and implement action-based plans to strive for continuous improvement of underwriting requirements, broker/client needs, and mission delivery. 
    • Participates in training and documentation initiatives to develop knowledge base.  
    • Own team results with unwavering personal daily effort standards focusing on goals, skills & career growth 
    • Analyze prospective brokers and determine acceptability of risk in accordance with Company guidelines and practices in order to make the appropriate underwriting decisions. 
    • Collaborate with management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling. 
    • Work collaboratively within the Underwriting team and cross-departmentally to continually improve operations, process and workflows. 
    • Maintain thorough working knowledge of sound underwriting principles, policies, procedures, and controls. 
    • Create and prepare reports for management review 
    • Negotiate terms and conditions with brokers.

    • Identify areas for continuous improvement of processes to increase operational excellence  
    • Demonstrate responsiveness and urgency to brokers, as well as internal communication with colleagues within and across departments. 
    • Participate in special projects as assigned 
    • Travel as needed for team collaboration, events, client/carrier meetings (15%) 
    • Other duties as assigned. 

     

    Minimum Skills & Qualifications: 

    • 7 years’ experience within P & C Lines; focus and expertise in product & underwriting for General Liability, Property & Accident and Health strongly preferred 
    • Superior understanding of Product Management & Product Development, inclusive of policy form development and interaction with actuaries and reinsurers. 
    • Ability to use data and analytics to understand and drive underwriting strategy 
    • Strong project management, negotiation, influencing, legal and analytical skills 
    • Lead Program Underwriting Managers to create strategies and develop a profitable book of business. 
    • Create, manage, and revise underwriting policies, procedures, and update guidelines as needed. 
    • Hire, develop, mentor, and groom a team of Program Underwriting Managers specializing in middle market casualty lines. 
    • Develop budgets, rates, premiums, and pricing based on profitability and annual targets. 
    • Work through Independent Agents. 
    • Recommend pricing strategies based on the identification of positive and negative trends. 
    • Ability to absorb multi-disciplinary input and translate into effective actions Superior communication skills, both oral and written 
    • Demonstrated, proactive verbal and written communication skills. 
    • Demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. 
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy.

    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. 

     

    Desired Characteristics: 

    • Prior experience with Socotra and/or Salesforce, or ability to quickly learn 
    • Self-motivated and able to thrive in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment 
    • Strong emotional intelligence skills. 
    • Demonstrated experience and/or ability to influence without authority 
    • Demonstrated ability to build connections and rapport cross-departmentally 
    • Participant/involvement in or strong understanding of the youth/amateur sports landscape. 

     

    Additional Requirements: 

    • Ability to travel occasionally for team events, collaboration, engagement, conferences, or customer visits 
    • Must have a dedicated safe and secure remote work environment  
    • Must have the ability to work and be productive in a remote work environment
