Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director, the Histology Technician is responsible for
preparation and staining of specimens. S/He accessions the specimen for billing and maintains the Laboratory,
including supplies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs sections.
2. Responsible for training other histology technicians as required for covering the Laboratory.
3. Maintains section laboratory and equipment.
4. Performs gross sectioning, fixing, processing, embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping and mounting of
tissue.
5. Produces and maintains accurate records and bills for all work performed.
6. Re-orders stock items as needed.
7. Prepares stains and stock solutions, monitors pH and expiration dates.
8. Sets up, maintains, operates, and cleans all laboratory equipment and instruments.
9. Properly disposes of all chemicals.
10. Dates and labels used hazardous waste containers. Prepares hazardous waste for pick up.
11. Maintains quality control data for the laboratory.
12. May perform specialized tests including special stains, immunoperoxidase, cytospin, centrifuge techniques,
as well as preparation of smears.
