Animal and Facility Caretaker

  • This is not a paid position, it is housing in exchange for service. Ideal for a couple looking for free housing, utilities and internet in exchange for labor. The hourly rate is set as range to demonstrate value for the work performed even though it is not paid out but exchanged for rent.

    General Description:

    The barn manager is required to oversee the physical presence of the farm and animal safety and wellbeing. All areas should be in working order to ensure everyone's safety while on the property. All feeding and cleaning will be performed by the barn manager or clearly delegated.

    Core Job Functions:

    • Provide the highest quality care for the animals on the property ensuring they receive clean, proper nutrition on a consistent basis. Am feed, Pm feed and night check
    • Work with the team to provide a welcoming, clean and organized facility
    • Administer all medications as needed and assist with all vet care of all animals
    • Blanket/un blanket horses as needed
    • Wash and store blankets properly
    • Maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for all guests and staff, weeding, watering, keeping the barns and walkways swept and free of debris
    • Keep feeding area clean and tidy, all medications put away
    • Clearing snow and putting down ice melt as needed
    • Ensuring tools and equipment are returned to their proper place and stored correctly
    • Ensure the arena is prepared for therapy sessions prior to the start of sessions, harrowed and watered
    • Ensure ramps are safe and clear of debris before therapy
    • Ensure structural soundness of ramps, fence, gates, stalls/runs, etc
    • Maintain all fences and gates for the safety of animals and people
    • With guidance and direction from Owner: Manage pasture including weed control, irrigation, irrigation ditch management, and maintenance
    • Manage hay and feed supply for all animals, procure additional hay/feed as needed, proper storage of all feed and feed supplies. (all receipts are saved, filed and reviewed at the end of the month)
    • Volunteer for events related to the farm
    • Manage horse owners and respond to them with any questions or concerns in a timely manner
    • Coordinate with weekend barn manager
    • Attend meetings as needed
    • Manure management, including daily and weekly mucking of animal pens if no volunteers/DVR
    • Watering garden as needed
    • Collaborates with the Equine Program Director to clean and maintain tack areas

    Minimal Requirements:

    • Compliant with state healthcare regulatory requirements
    • Interpersonal communication skills
    • Self driven and able to manage time and tasks, some days there is less to do and other days more. Being able to flex time based on seasons, weather and needs of the animals/farm
    • Able to lift 50 lbs and be active in all weather types
    • Proficient in animal health and safety needs
    • Ability to assess animal conditions and make needed judgments for care
    • Ability to take care of animals and property
    • Basic computer and office suite skills are required to perform daily tasks

    • Ability to work in a team and independently

    Job Type: Part-time

    Pay: $15.00 - $25.00 per hour

    Expected hours: 20 – 30 per week
