Behavioral Health Biller and Receptionist

    Job Summary:
    Under the supervision of the Behavioral Health Coordinator, the Behavioral Health Biller and Receptionist is responsible for all third party and client billing of behavioral health services. This position will also greet clients and ensure that proper scheduling of appointments occurs for each counselor at the behavioral health clinic. This position is full-time, non-exempt, and eligible for overtime pay.

    Salary Range: $47,696 – 66,774 annually
    Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
    Illustrative Duties:

    • Billing Responsibilities:
      • Submit insurance claims as they are created through our Electronic Health Record – Therapy Notes.
      • Confirm that all billing codes and places of service are correct before submission.
      • Track ERAs and reconcile payments in Therapy Notes.
      • Communicate with insurance companies (primarily Alaska Medicaid) about any issues with claims as necessary.
      • Be able to investigate why a claim was denied and fix/resubmit as necessary.
      • Communicate with supervisor about tracking the required service hours for GHS’ intensive outpatient and residential treatment programs (ASAM 3.1 and 2.1) before submitting those claims.
      • Check Medicaid eligibility for all active treatment clients on a monthly basis.
      • Print monthly statements for self-pay GHS residents and give to Case Managers.
      • Print and mail out monthly statements for self-pay community clients.
      • Assist with data entry and other administrative tasks as requested.
    • Reception Responsibilities:
      • Help ensure adequate front office coverage and provide friendly, prompt customer service for all clients, visitors, and GHS employees. Greet and welcome clients and visitors to the clinic in person, via email, and on the telephone.
      • Answer inquiries about GHS services and refer all clinical and case-specific questions to other staff members as needed.
      • Schedule appointments for clinicians to optimize patient satisfaction, provider time, and most effective use of each clinician’s time.
      • Scan client documentation into the electronic health record.
      • Maintain the reception area in a neat and orderly condition.
      • Assist clients with insurance papers and billing questions.
      • Open and sort office mail.
    • Behavioral Health Team Responsibilities:
      • Participate in behavioral health emergency procedures when required. Summon ambulance, EMS, police dispatch, and assist other staff members as needed.
      • Participate in weekly team meetings and training as scheduled.
      • Other duties as assigned.
    Required Skills/Abilities:
    • Ability to quickly learn billing procedures and the use of an electronic health record system.
    • Personality and demeanor to deal with the public and support clients with a wide range of substance use and mental health challenges.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and support a team of coworkers with different work styles and scheduling preferences.
    • Excellent professional boundaries and ability to operate within the scope of practice as a non-clinical service provider.
    • Office skills such as typing, filing, and scanning.
    • Ability to protect confidential client information.
    • Good organizational skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
    • Comfortable using computers and tablets.
    • Be an active listener and good communicator with clients, coworkers, and community members.
    Education and Experience:
    • High school graduate or equivalent required.
    • At least one year of Medicaid and/or medical billing experience strongly preferred. Certification as a medical biller/coder preferred, or willingness to become certified once employed.
    • Experience working as a receptionist or administrative assistant preferred.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
    • Must pass DOH and ADOC background checks.
    • Must pass drug test upon hire.
