Infection Control Manager develops and implements infection control policies designed to reduce or eliminate outbreaks in the facility. Develops and implements facility-wide infection prevention and control measures to protect patients, staff and visitors. Being an Infection Control Manager monitors patient care for compliance with established standards and investigates known or suspected sources of infections in order to determine the source and ensure control. Develops and provides related education to staff. Additionally, Infection Control Manager complies with state, federal and Joint Commission standards relating to infection control. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Infection Control Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     This position is located in the Division of Clinical Services, Branch of Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Program Services, Ft. Peck Service Unit, Poplar, Montana. The incumbent reports to the QAPI Nurse Supervisor with responsibility for maintaining employee health records, performing and tracking infection control practice, FIT testing, competencies, and BLS.

    Education

    A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

    Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

    Licensure

    For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

    In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

    Basic Requirements For The GS-9 (or Equivalent) Grade Level

    In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; or
    • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program.

    Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level

    In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
    • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

    Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

    Examples of specialized experience for GS-9: Evaluate the processes and activities involving infection control, employee health and safety programs. Construct, implement, and facilitate clinical education needs of staff adhering to nursing principles, practices and processes.

    Examples of specialized experience for GS-11: Develop policies and procedures for infection control, employee health, and patient safety and ensure compliance with accreditation requirements. Understand and present health and educational resources. Manage employee health records, collect data and prepare reports for Quality Improvement and Clinical Committees.

    Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required.
