Information Technology Supervisor supervises the implementation and administration of information systems and equipment in accordance with organizational policies and goals. Implements internal procedures and guidelines to diagnose and resolve technical issues across different systems and technologies, including hardware, software, and networks. Being an Information Technology Supervisor analyzes business needs and recommends IT hardware and software products to support internal business processes. Develops detailed documentation of methodologies, processes, and specifications of an organization's IT systems and coordinates and schedules IT initiatives. Additionally, Information Technology Supervisor monitors information systems to ensure computer equipment, hardware, and software operate in alignment with organizational needs and standards. Installs and configures an organization's network infrastructure including LANs, WANs, and wireless networks and monitors network performance. Implements basic security measures to protect systems and data and develops backup strategies and recovery plans. Collaborates with business groups to help utilize information systems to improve operational efficiency. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Information Technology Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions.     Typical work assignments include:
  • Participate in cybersecurity partnerships with and across critical infrastructure owners and operators and state, local, tribal and territorial government.
  • Collaborate with critical infrastructure owners, operators, IT security experts, and managers to support organizational cybersecurity objectives.
  • Independently conduct cyber advisory visits and strategic cyber risk assessments to prepare and protect critical cyber infrastructure assets.
  • Serve as a keynote speaker at industry conferences, seminars, & events and participate as a panelist in discussions related to cybersecurity (i.e., data protection, risk management, ransomware, and incident response).
  • Participate in the establishment of community-based, regional, and/or statewide cyber security strategies, for state, local, and private partners and stakeholders.
  • Present findings and recommendations on complex issues or problems impacting major programs.
  • Advise senior management on cost-benefit analysis of information security programs, policies, processes, systems, and elements.
  • Measure effectiveness of defense-in-depth architecture against known vulnerabilities.
  • Review approved or proposed policies such as presidential executive orders, which may affect cybersecurity activities.

    You must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:

  • Customer Service - Experience maintaining relationships with customers, assessing current information technology needs of customers, and developing or identifying information technology products and services that are tailored to meet customer needs.
  • Oral Communication - Briefing mid-level management and IT staff on the status of information technology systems, projects, or daily operations, including the communication of technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Problem Solving - Identifying alternatives to address complex information technology-related issues by gathering and applying information from a variety of sources that provide a number of potential solutions.

    You must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:
  • Attention to Detail - Reviewing my own information technology-related work or data and have been responsible for reviewing the work of others to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency with standards.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
    In addition to meeting the qualification requirement listed above, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower GS-grade level (or equivalent). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT.

    You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level (or equivalent) performing the following duties:
  • Providing advisory services to leadership to ensure the proper operation of Information Technology (IT) systems throughout an organization;
  • Conducting risk and vulnerability assessments to protect Information Technology (IT) infrastructure assets and mitigate network vulnerabilities; AND
  • Developing policy and advocating for changes in policy that will support new initiatives or required changes/enhancements.

  • GS-14
    You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level (or equivalent) performing the following duties:
  • Managing Information Technology (IT) related programs and projects;
  • Providing advice and guidance to resolve, implement, or manage cybersecurity issues; AND
  • Coordinating cyber incidents for reporting organizations and to various federal, state, and local government programs and officials.

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
