Being an Instructor - Communication provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Communication typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research.     General Job Summary

    Kirkwood Community College is seeking a part-time Communication faculty member to teach a variety of Communication and Speech courses. We are looking for instructors to teach at the Main Campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as well as at our Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa in Coralville, Iowa. The English instructor will primarily be teaching Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Public Speaking, and Workplace Communication.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Constant (67-100%)

    • Effectively organize and teach Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Public Speaking, and/or Workplace Communication in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi.
    • Effectively teach in various delivery formats, including in-person and asynchronously online.
    • Maintain current course syllabi for all courses taught. File a current copy of the syllabus at the beginning of each term in accordance with department guidelines.
    • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
    • Evaluate, record, and share student performance and progress on a regular basis and provide students with timely feedback.
    • Make student referrals when deemed necessary to the other college personnel such as the dean, counselor, Financial Aid, etc., for more specialized information and assistance.

    • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
    • Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
    • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
    • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
    • Respond to staff questions for book orders.
    • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
    • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.
    • Attend your Kirkwood email each weekday.

    Physical Activities With/Without Reasonable Accommodation

    The position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • A conferred Master’s degree by date of appointment from an accredited institution with:
    • At least 18 graduate hours in a combination of Speech, Communication, English, Drama/Theater, Homiletics, Linguistics, Mass Media, Speech, Pathology, or Rhetoric coursework.
    • At least 6 of the 18 graduate hours must be in Speech or Communication.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

    • Familiarity or experience with teaching at a community college.
    • Familiarity and experience with teaching college communication and public speaking at all levels.
    • Experience teaching both written and oral workplace communication.
    • Familiarity or experience with teaching at a community college.
    • Coursework in college pedagogy and speech and communication instruction.
    • Demonstrated experience working with English Language Learners.
    • Demonstrated successful application of active and collaborative teaching strategies.
