Life Underwriting Director directs and oversees the life insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Life Underwriting Director provides coaching to underwriters and assists on more complex applications. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Additionally, Life Underwriting Director typically requires Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification or Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation. Typically reports to top management. The Life Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Life Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. Kalamazoo Young Life has active ministries at Kalamazoo Christian High School, Plainwell High School, Otsego High School & Middle School, and Capernaum and YoungLives ministries. We also have an active and growing Western Michigan University college ministry, which helps provide college-aged leaders for our ministries who serve alongside our parent support groups and adult volunteers.
Kalamazoo is a growing metropolitan area, home to a number of major corporations, as well as many family-owned businesses. While it has the resources of a larger city, it is also very family-oriented and has a small town feel. We see great opportunities for growth of Young Life in Kalamazoo.
The responsibilities of directing and leading the ministry across Southwest Michigan will play themselves out in Young Life’s 5 Core Functions of Ministry: spiritual development, leadership development, resource development, direct ministry, and ministry support.
Spiritual Development — “Following Jesus” includes prayer and spiritual disciplines, fellowship, growth and health, and church relationships.
Leadership Development — “Equipping leaders, committee and staff” includes key volunteer care, recruiting, team building and training, supervision. and vision casting.
Resource Development — “Fueling the ministry” includes events, major donor care, public relations (branding), and fundraising team.
Direct Ministry — “Proclaiming and modeling” includes contact work, club, Campaigners, and camp.
Ministry Support — “Taking care of business” includes accounting, administration, communication (internal), data management and strategic plan.
