    Job Description

    This position requires a current, valid teaching certificate issued and endorsed by the Michigan Department of Education. The teacher is a manager of prisoners in the classroom. The teacher must utilize established instructional practices to address the academic needs of all prisoners assigned to class at the ABE, Pre-GED and GED educational levels. The teacher will coordinate required assessment testing of students and complete all mandated reports in a timely manner. The teacher will help with Pre-Release programming for the facility (if needed) and will be responsible for keeping instruction and resources in alignment with the departmental Re-Entry program. This is a covered position located behind the secure perimeter of a correctional facility. This position will be full time, work hours will set by facility need and demand.

    Required Education and Experience

    The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.

    Possession of current, appropriate Michigan teacher's certificate issued by the State Board of Education.

    Teachers (other than substitute teachers) who are employed at the School for the Deaf and Blind, state facility for delinquent or neglected youth, or a prison in a special education assignment will be required to obtain six semester credits per year until full approval for employment in the Special Education Teacher classification has been met.
