Additionally, Manufacturing Director implements long-term plans for facilities, equipment, materials, technology, and workforce resources to maintain manufacturing capacity and processes that support business goals. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Manufacturing Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     Job Description

    The Director of Quality Assurance reports directly to the CEO and is a member of the company's management team and food safety team. The Director is obligated to inform the President if he/she perceives there to be a risk that is not being addressed by company management, production procedures, facility conditions, food safety policies or any other activity that could challenge the company's Quality integrity. He/she is designated by the Company as the person responsible for the validation and verification of the Company's SQF System. The Director has completed a HACCP Training Course, and is experienced and competent to implement and maintain HACCP based food safety plans. The Director has an understanding of the SQF Code and the requirements to implement and maintain the SQF System relevant to the Company's Scope of Certification. The Director understands and complies with all food safety policies, procedures and programs as stated in the Company's Food Safety Manual.

    Responsibilities

    • The Director is responsible for leading the integration of the current quality assurance and food safety processes into one integrated process. This includes the HACCP system, regulatory audits, quality systems review process (QSR), standard operating procedures (SOP's), incoming ingredient inspections, product scoring, food safety audits, field complaints and standardized work instructions.
    • Responsible for developing, implementing and executing SQF plans to achieve/maintain SQF Level 1 and 2 Certification at the facility and to meet all Company requirements relating to quality and food safety programs.
    • Responsible for overseeing plant compliance and interactions with the SQF Certification Body.
    • Responsible for developing, implement, reviewing and maintaining systems to assure compliance to all SQF System requirements including Commitment, Document Control and Records, Specifications, Attaining Food Safety, Verification, Validation, Internal Auditing, Produce Identification, Trace and Recall, Incident Management, Food Safety Fundamentals Building and Equipment Design and Construction, and Food Safety Fundamentals Pre-requisite Programs, and HACCP program. The Director of takes appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the SQF System.Responsible for developing and maintaining the SQF Document and Contract Service Providers registries.
    • Responsible for managing finished product evaluation systems and providing leadership to drive improvements in key customer/consumer Quality attributes.
    • Responsible for training and maintaining all training records for critical food safety (Advanced and Specialized HACCP Training) and internal auditing requirements. In addition, the Director is responsible for documenting and maintaining a training registry for all employees at the manufacturing site.
    • Responsible for overseeing, monitoring, verifying, and validating all required activities to ensure that all products leaving the facility meet Company Food Safety and Quality standards.
    • Responsible for providing guidance and leadership in situations where deviations have occurred or a potential risk has been identified relating to food safety and/or quality attributes.
    • Responsible for reassessing the SQF plan whenever there is a change to the program, process, procedure, ingredient, equipment, industry philosophy, technology, etc. The Director participates in an annual Senior Management Review of the SQF System, and shall be responsible for validating all appropriate changes, and maintaining all records of reviews and reasons for amending documents, validations and changes to the SQF System.
    • Responsible for recommending process improvements, improved equipment design, and solutions concerning food safety related problems.
    • Responsible for being aware of and achieving company profitability and budgetary controls.
    • In concert with the Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for conducting employee performance reviews based upon their specific job description to determine competency, knowledge and contribution level.
    • Responsible for leading the Food Safety and Food Recall Teams.
    • Expected to be knowledgeable of market and industry trends, competitors and leading customer strategies.
    • Must receive at minimum 16 hours annually of department related training or education.
    • The Director is expected to be a role model for the company culture.
    • Understands and complies with all food safety policies, procedures and programs as stated in the Company's Food Safety Manual.
    • Participates as a functional member of the food safety team, and enforce the Food Safety Manual policies. This includes collaborating, leading and supporting Quality Assurance in order to resolve food safety issues.

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Expertise in food safety
    • Excellent ability to analyze and assess risk
    • Current knowledge of regulatory government requirements (i.e. FDA, USDA, etc.) rules and regulations
    • Must have considerable knowledge of GMP's, HACCP, and SSOP as it applies to the food industry
    • Established reputation to liaise with government regulatory agencies and consumer associations
    • Expertise in handling product recalls, and assisting with damage control
    • Knowledge of Quality Systems Standards
    • Good knowledge of latest pathogen detection techniques
    • Experience in handling customer and consumer complaints
    • Knowledge of food microbiology, analytical chemistry, and sensory methods
    • Must possess strong leadership, communication and organizational skills.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

    Qualifications

    • Minimum Education Required: Bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in Food Microbiology, Food Technology, and Food Science.
    • Master's degree is strongly preferred.
    • Seven (7 ) plus years of experience in food safety in a manufacturing environment; including an understanding of food science and microbiology.
    • Regulatory background (federal or state) is preferred.
