Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Responsibilities for a Medical Translator/Interpreter include but are not limited to:

    • Provide interpretation services for patients and healthcare providers in a medical setting.
    • Facilitate effective communication between patients and healthcare professionals, ensuring accurate understanding of medical information.
    • Interpret conversations, medical procedures, and instructions in real-time.
    • Translate written documents such as medical records and consent forms.
    • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics while interpreting sensitive medical information.

    Knowledge Experience/Education/Training:

    • High school diploma/ GED required. Some college preferred.
    • Computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Medical Office experience is helpful but not required (this knowledge will be provided through training).
    • At least one (1) year's customer service experience in a medical or hospital setting
    • Excellent communication skills to convey messages clearly and accurately.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills to establish rapport with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
    • Must possess good organizational skills and be able to work independently when necessary.
    • Knowledge of clinic protocols and procedures related to interpretation services is a plus.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.
