Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. EDUCATION
Associate degree required. Bachelor degree with a concentration in language, communication, hospitality/customer service, business or an allied medical field preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of one year of medical interpreting required. Experience in a healthcare/hospital setting preferred. Experience in handling a variety of customers at all socio-economic levels. Experience and ability to enter and retrieve data from EMR systems, i.e. Epic, Meditech etc.
LICENSURE
National certification required for Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Arabic, Vietnamese and Korean. Not required for other languages.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Must be fluent in a foreign language and in English, both verbal and written. Proven ability to work as a part of a team and to work with limited supervision. Completes the accurate entry of data in both Epic and the Language Services System. Substantial knowledge of medical vocabulary in at least two languages.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Hearing sufficient to understand and interface effectively between two or more parties in a medical interview who speak different spoken languages. Sitting 10-20% of the day, Standing or ambulating 80% of the day, able to move quickly through a large multi-floored complex with many buildings. Visual acuity sufficient to read printed matter. Interpreter will be required to be flexible with start and end times of shift. May be required travel to different YNHH facilities to include satellite offices.
