Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     SUMMARY: To provide interpretation for students who have need for an alternate mode of communication due to deafness or significant hearing impairment.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

    • Interprets for and tutors students with deafness or hearing impairments. Services will be provided within the classroom or other educationally related environments.
    • Communicates to the Deaf Educator assignments and academic or other needs of the students.
    • Follows the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics where deemed appropriate and necessary.
    • Spends majority of time working directly with individual children; spends minimal time on typing, making copies, correcting papers and other clerical tasks.
    • Reads and follows the building regulations and rules found in the staff handbook.
    • When necessary, attends IEP Team meetings to provide input on a student’s program and progress.
    • Participates in necessary inservice training programs as assigned and takes responsibility for keeping current with training and certification requirements.
