    The Environmental Assessment Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Microbiologist 2 position. This position is located in our Manchester Environmental Laboratory in Port Orchard, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

In this role, you will be responsible for performing and examining complex microbiological tests on water in a production environmental laboratory creating legally binding data. You will gain valuable experience in a production laboratory atmosphere implementing EPA Methods, Standard Methods, and following quality assurance protocols, with opportunities to build a network and collaborative relationships in this field of work.

    Program Mission:
    The mission of the Environmental Assessment Program is to measure, assess, and communicate environmental conditions in Washington state.

    Our Manchester Environmental Laboratory is an environmental laboratory, providing scientific services to local, state, federal, and tribal governments and laboratory analyses on samples collected throughout the state for organic, inorganic, and microbiological contaminants.

    Schedule: This position is required to work in the office five days per week and is not eligible for telework.     Duties




    What makes this role unique?
    You will be joining the inorganics unit at the Manchester Environmental Laboratory, a highly active production lab, where you will be responsible for following EPA Methods, Standard Methods, and strict Quality Control protocols. As a microbiologist in this unit, you must demonstrate attention to detail, strong organizational skills, a collaborative nature, effective communication skills, and the ability to work both on your own and together with a team.

    What you will do:
    • Perform complex microbiological analyses on environmental samples.
    • Provide backup support in primary analyses for other chemists and lab technicians as needed, performing chemical analyses on samples for parameters including alkalinity, conductivity, and turbidity.
    • Uphold a high degree of accuracy in all work output and communication.
    • Maintain professional relationships that are inclusive, collaborative, and respectful.
    • Conduct work both independently and together with the inorganics team.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

    • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
    • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

    Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

    A total of six (6) years of experience and/or education as described below:

    • Experience
      in a microbiology laboratory.
    • Education involving a major study in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, public health, pathobiology, medical technology, environmental health, or closely allied field.

    Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

    • Must successfully pass federal ePASS background check in order to have access to the federal facility that houses the Ecology laboratory.

    Desired Qualifications:

    We highly encourage you to apply even if you do not have some (or all) of the desired experience below.

    • Preferred education: Bachelor’s degree in microbiology.
    • Preferred knowledge and experience:
      • Two years of experience in analyzing environmental samples for microbiological parameters such as E. coli and fecal coliforms using techniques such as Membrane Filtration or Most Probably Number.
      • One year of experience analyzing samples for turbidity, conductivity, alkalinity, and salinity.
      • Knowledge of Standard Methods or EPA microbiological and general chemistry analysis methods followed by MEL.
      • One year of experience with Word and Excel.
