Position Description
The Assistant Dean of Students is a high-energy, dynamic individual who is driven by a strong student-centered vision, committed to social justice, and aligned to the mission and visions of Vaux BPHS. The Assistant Dean will support the implementation of school safety and cultural systems to ensure the Vaux school community is safe and conducive to learning.

The Assistant Dean’s primary role is to be a strong member of an extraordinary team in the school community – actively, effectively, and continuously building community within our students in service of our mission and vision for future impact. The Assistant Dean of Students enforces the school’s behavior systems and builds strong, mutually respectful relationships with students and families. The Assistant Dean supports the staff in addressing behavior issues as they arise, ensuring that students maximize their level of engagement & contribute to the learning experience in the classroom.

Responsibilities
Culture and climate support

● Facilitate smooth transitions at the start and end of the school day.
● Assist teachers in the establishment and execution of classroom rules and procedures that support teaching and learning.
● Enforce the Code of Student Conduct and all District policies and procedures.
● Attend workshops and professional development sessions on climate and behavior-enhancing programs and initiatives.
● Intervene to minimize potential conflicts between students to prevent escalation of situations.
● Participate in the implementation of the School Climate Plan.
● Support After-School Activity coordination up to 2 days per week
● Reinforce appropriate behavior with individual students.
● Monitor student behavior during unstructured time.

Qualifications
● Associate's Degree in education, youth development, or a related field required; Bachelor's Degree preferred. Other forms of post-secondary education may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
● At least two years of full-time experience participating in schools or youth development programming, ideally developing and implementing conflict- resolution programs.
● Must have a sense of humor and enjoy working with youth.
● Experience working in an urban public school or other large system

● Thorough understanding of and enthusiasm for the Big Picture Philadelphia mission
● Commitment to practices that foster diversity, equity and inclusion

Skills and Abilities
● Familiarity with conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies
● Demonstrated understanding of social, emotional, and economic issues as they relate to urban families
● Fluency with evidence-based school climate strategies
● Ability to learn and follow all school- and district-level policies/procedures
● Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
● Enthusiasm for establishing and promoting effective working relationships with staff across all levels and functions of the organization, as well as with outside consultants and vendors, and members of the larger Big Picture Philadelphia community of partners and stakeholders

● Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a diverse, complex, and fast paced work environment
● Understanding of and ability to put into practice federal, state, and local school law
● Knowledge of public education is highly desired, but not required
● Commitment to communicate proactively and regularly with supervisors and colleagues around progress, obstacles, and needs
● Proficiency in common computer software applications and willingness to learn new applications and systems as needed
● Strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills
● Excellent organizational skills, including time management, attention to details, and the ability to balance competing priorities and meet deadlines
● Strong problem solving and strategic thinking skills
● Willingness and desire to participate in unexpected projects
● Commitment to professional growth

Compensation
The Assistant Dean is a full-time employee eligible for a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, vision, dental, short and long term disability insurance, and a 401k retirement plan with employer matching. Salary is commensurate with experience.
