Nuclear Laboratory Technologist Supervisor supervises personnel engaged in diagnostic laboratory testing. Performs assigned phases of nuclear research under the guidance of Director of Nuclear Medicine. Being a Nuclear Laboratory Technologist Supervisor assists medical students with hands-on instruction and equipment training. Monitors inventory of radioisotopes. Additionally, Nuclear Laboratory Technologist Supervisor may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine. The Nuclear Laboratory Technologist Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general direction, responsible for the operation of one or more technical areas or shifts in
a clinical laboratory. Prepares and maintains technical and operating procedures to meet
accrediting and regulatory requirements. Responsible for staff recruitment, competency,
engagement, and performance management. Evaluates and implements test methods in
collaboration with medical and Technical Team leaders. Oversees supply chain requirements.
Prepares financial forecasts for use in planning and uses metrics to manage service quality.
Participates in developing and implementing system-wide standards for the Pathology and
Laboratory Medicine Service Line.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties and responsibilities of the supervisor encompass four major areas: Technical,
Human Resources, Finance, and Quality Management.
Technical:
1. Assures section compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements,
including educational, competency, proficiency testing, and safety.
2. Oversees test performance characteristics, quality control programs, and resolves
problems.
3. Maintains up to date technical procedures and validation testing.
4. Prepares and/or reviews management reports and metrics.
5. Oversees and assists in maintaining LIS database for technical areas.
Human Resources:
1. Interviews and orients new employees to maintain adequate staffing levels.
2. Prepares performance management documents and ensures staff competency.
3. Actively manages employee engagement and the development of a favorable culture.
4. Monitors daily, weekend, holiday, and vacation schedules for adequate staffing.
5. Supports clinical rotations of new staff and students and extends cross-training
Budget:
1. Provides information and forecasts for preparation of operating and capital budgets.
2. Monitors operating budgets with timely attention to variances.
3. Maintains supply chain to ensure expected consumables are available for service levels.
Quality Management:
1. Leads involvement in quality management activities including oversight of indicators,
metrics, and customer-supplier feedback. Understands service standards of customers.
2. Uses quality tools to identify and correct defects and variation from standard work.
3. Engages technical and support staff to take the lead in identifying and resolving defects.
4. Promotes and encourages participation in Quality Management for shared learning.
5. Maintains a focus on service quality that directly impacts patients and providers.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Completion of an accredited Bachelor’s Degree program in a chemical, physical,
biological science, medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
2. Requires five years of experience, with progressive responsibility, in a hospital or clinical
laboratory setting including experience with laboratory accreditation.
3. Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to oversee
laboratory functions.
4. Must demonstrate proficiency with personal computers for word processing and
spreadsheets.
5. Ability to effectively communicate in written and verbal interactions.
